I purchased this one from a sales table at the AABC convention in 2012. The trunk has been grown by clipping and no work has been done on the branches other than removal of some from the trunk.

Steven

First bit of work on this was a bit of a surprise to my class mates at The School Of Bonsai last night. Plenty of comments that defoliation wouldn't work on Junipers etc

The upper half of the tree was stripped of foliage and I then removed the bark by gently squeezing with jin pliers then peeling it off. The deadwood was wired to give it movement and a couple of branches were also wrapped around a thicker piece of wire to give them more of a rugged twisted look. I'll remove the wire in a few weeks once the deadwood has dried and set in place. It will be reduced in length when I start to refine it further.

Next step will be to choose branches and wire for shape. I'll then spend the rest of the time refining.

Thanks Grant. I've been going to the Tuesday night advanced class for the last couple of years. I first went to the School of Bonsai back in 1982 where I was taught by Ron Flack. It's good to be back :tu:

I note that the branches were jinned - then wired into place.

I had thought that this process might not hold the position?

My understanding was that live branches should be wired - then set - then jinned?

Boics, I have had some success using both methods, as such I'm led to believe that both work. Just depends on preference I suppose.

Stripped wood is going to die quicker, so the setting will take less time.
