Growing Season in Australia, Help Please

Australian conditions vary from one extreme to another. What do you do and when do you do it?

Growing Season in Australia, Help Please

Post by RevoEvoS »

So I got a variety of species as Bonsai and would like to know when to prune, wire/bend branches or trunk, repot, root cutting and fertilising with either osmocote pellets or blood/bone mix.
Hard time figuring out since these are starter/pre bonsai at its current state and the weather in NSW in general either gets really hot in summer or really wet, autumn feels like spring/winter, winter feels like you are in the Antarctic.
Really need to know since videos on the internet doesn't help when majority are US based

Prostrata Juniper
Trident Maple
Shimpaku Juniper
Cotoneaster
Flowering Cherry
Kyoto Serissa
Chinese Elm
Hinoki Cypress

Thanks Mogginator for posting those links.
They are what I use too as a guide.

root work ( and slow release in the pot), Deciduous trees - winter, Evergreen - Spring or Autumn.
Pruning When needed.
Fert - Liquid every fortnight and pellets every 6-8 weeks thru the growing season. ( never used B & B, but might suggest every few weeks too :lost: )

I got a really good bonsai book. "Bonsai it's art, science, history, and philosophy" it's really good it has a calendar for when to do things like trim branches and roots. It is written for the australian seasons. I had my book for a few years I got it from a big bonsai nursery on the gold coast.

This book has so much info in it, but unfortunately my books need more colour pictures to keep me interested. This is why I rave about Leongs books.

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

Both these books have great info. However, 2 things to remember about books:
1. Just because it has been published does not make it true.
2. Written info may not be the whole truth - there are often other ways, times, etc

Absorb the info from books, etc, analyse it with other things you already know and other sources of info and also think laterally and don't be afraid to try new ways.
