Hi Temps and hot days

Australian conditions vary from one extreme to another. What do you do and when do you do it?

Alpine

some pics of the garden after THAT week of hell! Has held up pretty good with only some leaf burn on a few of the more touchy maples and hornbeans. I think a combination of heavy mulching and a lot of water kept it pretty good. Also some pics of the bonsai area . Automatic timers kicked in at 7.30am and 3pm that week. The more sensitive species were under shadecloth.
Most of the pines, figs were exposed to full sun. Some of the tridents also that have seemed to have done well. The little seeding pot bound have suffered and turned that autumn red that they do when unhappy. One large Japanese maple got cooked abit so ill defoliate in feb.

Things have gone nucken futs!

It's 24 degrees in Hedland and raining - I'm freezing!

Luckily for us, this rain is a God-sent as it is revitalising all our plants in the garden. Hope you get a break soon too!
Cheers

Hi Matthew , mate i can see that water right is working well . My place is brown from top to bottom with a hint of green being the stock i have . At least i dont have to mow the lawns cos there aint any left . The temps here are still in the low 40's here although i did take the gauge down to where the town temps are measured and its 10 degree's cooler , but they dont have my view .

My grass will come back but a lot of material wont , it been too hot for too long and the damage is done .I have to be grateful its only sun burn and not fire .

Cheers Alpine

I'm in Brisbane and I complain at 33 degrees. My heart goes out to you all. Hope you stay safe and well.
My grey hair is my solar panel, as with the leaf on the bonsai is theirs.

Alpine we are in for some ordinary weather again with 40+ predicted for 5 days starting thursday. That rain we got was a blessing but after this it might as well had not happened. I'm sooooooooooooooo looking forward to hopefully a cold autumn and rock hard winter .

Hey Aline and Matt,
just wondering if a mist-spray on a fan might do the trick for your plants? We can buy misting kits (altho retic misting sprays and a small flexible hose would do) clipped to a fan (or use cable ties) and the combination (wind and moisture evaporating) would/should affect the localised temperature … Not sure if would work for you?
We get ours from Home Hardware.

just a thought.

Hi Mathew , mate it past the 40 degree mark yesterday and into the mid 40's now . Cant wait til its really going to pass 40' it will no doubt be another killer and another week of it by the time it cools off .

I draped some shade cloth over 3 of the grow beds as i trimmed the burnt Tridents back before the alert came out that the heat would return . Hopefully the strong Nth/ Westerly wont blow it away.

Hi CoG' I would need a lot of fans to cover the area's effected by the heat .

Cheers Alpine

Isitangus wrote:Ouch-do you have a watering system? If so does turning that on drop the temp?
Yes. Evaporating water into the air will cool the air. The lower theoretical limit is the wet bulb temperature of the air.
In Melbourne on hot days like this it is usually very dry ie wet bulb temperature ~20 deg C.

Its been the dry heat killing me over here, has barely been a cloud in the sky in months! Apparently have a cool spell this weekend, so going to repot while I can

I've repositioned most of my garden (as I don't really have a bench) so that I have all the taller tree's in nursery pots shading my ones in bonsai pots. Otherwise they get way too much sun and wind, and are bone dry by the time I get home to water them. Am constantly having to dance around with them depending on the heat of the day, my garden feels like rubix cube sometimes lol
Have a question? The AusBonsai Wiki most likely has the answer!

Looking for a Nursery or Club near your? Check out the AusBonsai Directory which lists them all

WELCOME TO SUMMER,
driving home from church after lunch and the thermometer in our car tells us its a balmy 49 degrees ... experience tells us that the AC has stopped working :crybye: and there is no breeze anywhere...

Whats even funnier is that we have a sprinkler - aimed at the the heat exchanger of the AC :palm:

I'm gonna need a Shade house with an insulated tin roof!!! :aussie:
Cheers
