Cool change supposed to be coming through our way tonight. Reading back through this topic is depressing and a reminder of things to come :-(

Yer, I found some shade cloth and will have to invent something until my Christmas pressy arrives...
I have lost enough trees!

So I've just read through the thread and now I'm terrified! This is my first summer with bonsai.

I'm guessing the best investments are shadecloth and a timer to water them through the night in hot weather?

Adabel.
Fill some trays with water and a layer of stones.
Then rest smaller more sensitive pots in top of the stones. This will give you some insurance.

Shade cloth and water timers are great ideas!

You know it's summer when:

These are all alongside our roads...

Well it seems i have suvived 13 days straight at 35 degress plus for MARCH! i think most of the country was getting some simular heat . Its not unusual to get a few hot days in march in NE vic but not a constant run i got :(
Havent had a look at my trees yet to see if any burn etc just had the auto sprinklers flooding the area twice a day . I have estimated i have used 90-100,000 litres of water in the past 2 weeks to get them through

Anyone else get these run of hot days and how are your trees coping . looks like from tuesday here onwards it should start to revert back to normal temps . yay 10-12 at night :) :) :)

Hi Mathew , mate it been an unusual season . I only watered twice a day on a few occasions . The heat has been extreme and losses considerable , but that's Bonsai . No need to mow here its basically burnt off and most of my losses this season were JBP's , Chinese Elms and Tridents , all of the other material has thrived in the heat .

I averaged around 2-2 1/2 thousand litres of water per day for a single watering , but there has been a few vegies mixed in the grow beds . A few heavy showers last night was a real blessing however they didn't produce enough of the good drop .

Cheers Alpine
