Autumn 2016

Nights are cool enough now to initiate the start of colour change in deciduous trees in my area.

Still a while to go to peak colour but a few colder nights along with these endless sunny days will push the process along.

For those poor folk living in the city and coastal areas the next few weeks is the time to arrange a trip to the foothills and mountains to take in the wonderful autumn colours.
North East Victoria is well known for lovely sunny autumn days and great deciduous colours.

No autumn here in sunny QLD. It is 24.6 degrees at present and heading for 27 max all week :palm: But according to our former PM there is no such thing as climate change :lost:

Hi Neil and everybody,

Here in the Yarra Ranges we have had mixture of clear sunny days, our daytime temps a little cooler here with cool to cold nights similar to North East VIC.

Some of my stock trees that are fully exposed to the elements have been showing nice colour for a few weeks.

Smaller shohin trees in development that have been living in a more shaded and cold protected spot are a little slower in developing colour, but should eventually be as colourful. They have been on a higher feed regime to, which can supress colour a little. It's worth pointing out that these trees live just a couple of metres away from the others, but in a different microclimate.

Thanks for the pics guys. We don't get as much Autumn colour on the Adelaide plains but up in the hills it's starting to look good. Autumn is my favourite time of year.

I wish I could grow Larch but it doesn't get cold enough in my back yard. We always want what we can't have!

Matt.

Hi Matt, I feel your pain.

There are times in the middle of winter when it has been drizzling for the last 20 days that I wished I had your climate and could grow Olives well.

Cheers,
Mojo

Up here on the Darling Downs we are starting to get a little bit of colour, although nothing much on my maples as yet. The poplars and persimmons in the garden have both changed colour and some of the elms too. We are still getting warm days, but some of the nights lately have been cool. Looking forward to the progression over the next few weeks, but not the inevitable raking of leaves.

Here in the high country south of Cooma every tree is turning towards Autumn . Micro climate is still important and the Japanese Maples under the Cotoneaster bush are still the brightest green , not like this one which will look even better next week .
And, yes , it is the best time of the year .

We have had another run of warm nights so autumn colour is not as intense as some years but most of the trident bonsai now have some colour.

English elms are also colouring little by little so some leaves have fallen before others start to change

Zelkova has more intense autumn colour

The back of that zelkova is more exposed so has better colour at the moment

Around the garden autumn is progressing too

Not much colour here yet. Although the maple over the fence seems to have turned!

Will keep you all posted on the change as it happens :)

And here is a pic of my Acer Palmatum Dissectum - weeping form. This turns a magnificent colour so really looking forward to this one in the next few weeks.

Here's my one example of Autumn colour. For some reason my Hawthorn has decided to put on a display this year.
