Autumn 2017
Autumn colour has arrived at Shibui Bonsai.
A couple of trees turned early but the weather has been mild so many are changing late. This week tridents are about at their peak. The English elms are also starting to change. With rain forecast this may be as good as this one gets this year. Another EE is only about half coloured and the shohin only has a couple of yellow leaves this week.
Cotoneaster berries are nice at the moment. The cage I made has kept the blackbirds off so the berries have reached full colour this year for the first time. Only a couple of Japanese maples have changed colour so far. This one does not have the strong reds but I think it will be really nice with the strong yellows and oranges. As a bonus it has red stems. I'm not sure if it is actually Sangu Kaku or just a seedling that happens to have the coloured stems.

Re: Autumn 2017
Interestingly my E.E's went Pinkish this year instead of yellow. My tridents are already bare, a strange year because of the unseasonable warmth and humidity which has persisted throughout April. You trident group is looking the goods Neil.

Re: Autumn 2017
EE colour must depend on conditions Bodhi. I usually have a mix of browns, oranges and some yellow but I have photos from a few years ago when they went brilliant gold.
Tridents seem to be changing a few leaves at a time so there is not a brilliant show at any one time mix of green and colour then, as in the pics, a mix of colour and browns.

Re: Autumn 2017
Well and truly into Autumn in the southern highlands according to my Japanese Maples . That little Berberis in the background is putting on quite a show as well . My E.E's are mostly just turning although one has lost all its leaves already .
Cheers

Re: Autumn 2017
Still only a couple of really cold nights so full autumn colour is slow in coming. Some trees are responding with a different colour display, others still have not responded.
The gingko is probably about as good as it will get this week. This Japanese maple is one of the few to change colour so far but it is quite intense red this year. This root over rock trident is unusually strong in reds this year. The smallest trident has the pastel colours that tridents usually develop at this time of year. So does this larger root over rock trident. And this one too One Chinese elm has turned yellow. Others are still quite green.
Euonymus have earned the common name of 'burning bush' because of the autumn colours. Pity they are so slow to develop. Here is an example of how the same tree can react differently. Both these gingkos are cuttings so genes should be the same. Both grown in these pots very close together, watered and fed as equal as I can but one has changed colour while the other is still quite green. I assume the green one will turn golden in its own time.

Very nice!
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: Autumn 2017
I love Autumn, and it's finally arrived in my backyard in Adelaide. I don't have a big collection of trees and so my old Hawthorn is the only tree I have that shows off any colour.

Re: Autumn 2017
Shibui, that Trident ROR in training has an amazing base and root spread. I am normally not so keen on trees growing over big flat rocks, but your root work is excellent. Consider me converted.

Re: Autumn 2017
My maples live on a concrete patio, so no colour yet, even in Canberra.
The crepe myrtle has gone gold.
I don't remember seed pods in past years.
And some cobwebs.
The hornbeam has also gone gold. Stick in the middle at the top is stabilising a bend in the upper trunk. Eagle-eyed readers may detect the fencing-wire loops I use to move branches where I want them.
With some contrasting wildlife.
I envy well-coloured Zelkovas - mine always go this kind of dark urk.
And some variety maple leaves - the label has long since faded.
They are a heartbreak to try to grow on their own roots, but the leaves are magic at this time of year.
