Hi guys.
Wondering if anyone can tell me if they can tell me whats wrong with my Ch. Elm.
Is it dieback or has it picked up something nasty.

The second picture is just a piece that has died back to the fork. I assume the first is the same thing but can't get a look at it because it is focussed on the rear rather than the bit we need to look at.
Not sure why this has died but I think a healthy tree should get over it.

Hello Andy,
I belief a bad fungal problem as well as the die back or the fungal problem caused the die back.
Also a leaf eater has / is also causing your plant stress.
I had a similar problem last season, I put my plants into intensive care and researched. I came across, which i believed to be my issues was 'Fungal Bark Disease'.
I can see areas of bark that are presently not discoloured but sunken, suggesting the disease is well established into other areas as well.
I suggest you research this issue to be sure because fatality is the result if i'm right and you continue your current cultural management procedures.

I found a picture on mr google of what looks like what I have on my elm. Got side tracked and could not find it again!!!!
Ithink it is a fungal disease with I believe canker. Sprayed today with fungicide, now its a waiting game.

Andy, just spraying won't help. The fungicide will not penetrate down the diseased area. You need to clean the area very thoroughly down to fresh clean tissue. Then you can give a spray with copper or something and seal the whole area when dry. I have had a similar rot set up in one of my elms this year. Lack of sealing the wounds was the reason. Normally it wouldn't be an issue but this year has been very good weather for fungi!
