Pest ID

Post by Mbunro »

I have both these bugs swarming around the leaves of my schefflera. Also swarming on the lawn. This is my first spring in the new house so I don't know if it's normal or not, but they seem to be leaving my other plants alone. Anyone have any ideas on what they are and how I would go about getting rid of them on a large scale...ImageImage

The first one is a leaf hopper (jassid - bad guy) the second looks like a wasp that probably parasitizes the jassid (good guy) You can kill everything by spraying if you want on the potted plant . If they are in your lawn you cannot spray them. They like our current humid weather and will disappear when it gets dry. I have them at the moment too.

Leaf hoppers have been out of control for years now in Melbourne.
Not sure if you can do much, as TM says they will dwindle in numbers as summer rolls on.

Ive no idea about the other one.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Second picture not clear enough for an accurate diagnosis but looks like Rutherglen Bug. sap sucking insect that can appear in very high numbers and devastate some crops and plants. They seem to prefer flowering and seed stems.
They were exceptionally bad up here last year.

Thanks for the replies. I think jassid and Rutherglen bug are on the money... Half the grass is freshly laid 4 weeks ago so it's been getting a lot of water so humidity would be higher than usual... All my plants are due for a bit of confidor anyway so Il do that and wait for them to pass...
