Do you think Quarantine will let them in? You had better check....
Whilst walking through the forest of Bonsai Myths, I found a single small tree.
From it I learned all I needed to know.

Re: Akadama
Hi Brett,
Sorry for the belated reply, been in China for the week and internet access has been a bit dodgy. Only got to log on now that I am southward bound.
You were asking what I paid for the past three years when I have been buying the Kanuma for my azaleas.
Whilst I dont have the figure to hand, as an order of magnitude the landed cost to Sydney (from Perth) was around $40 per bag. Even if we are now nudging $20, its cheap at half the price (literally)
Regards
Steve

Re: Akadama
Bretts,
Given how much sreeve (Steve) has been paying to get it landed on the east coast ($40 a bag) and we are only looking at $20 per bag for a pallet...I'll up my order to 10 bags if possible please. 7 Akadema Medium and 3 Kanuma Medium. I guess that s a fair bit but I plan to try and take some of my currently little guys into retirement with me.
Failing me using it then I can always resell it to others at a later date....
Thanks
John

Re: Akadama
20 bucks a bag for Akadama? Thats pretty good bargain. I bought the same stuff from Perth a few years back when the guy advertised it on Ebay. Cost me like $50 a bag. I must admit, the stuff is pretty good. Expensive though considering some trees may need to be repotted every couple of years. Although you can recycle some of the Akadama as long as it doesnt crumble too much. I have extremely large trees so I bought the large sized akadama and I recycled the stuff for my medium sized trees as some of it crumbled to smaller sized particle. The problem with akadama is that it doesnt hold nutrients and I found that although the trees get a growth spurt compared to a normal self-made mix during the first year, the trees in the selfmade mix eventually catch up after the second year. However having said this, there are great benefits for this stuff such as preventing root rot etc. I no longer buy the stuff cause its too expensive if you have so many trees. Its just cheaper to make your own mixes, besides you learn alot more about your own plant by making your own mixes. Anyway good luck with the buy. Happy days, Scissorhand.techpetal wrote:Bretts,

Re: Akadama
Hi Scissorhands,
Like you I use my own mix for all plants except my Azaleas - I swear by Kanuma, but each to their own.
Another additional benefit of either Kanuma or Akadama is that it basically weighs nothing, so large pots dont require superhuman effort to lift.
The Kanuma I had been buying was top quality whereas the Akadama I had been buying before was poor quality and not hard enough.
My understanding is that this supplier only provides the top quality stuff and is actually used by a couple of the WA gurus that visit here.
I reckon that they and the Japanese bonsai fraternity cant all be wrong
Regards

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.
