Re: Diatomite now available
Be nice if we could get some in North Qld, since it is mined in THIS state. Have been trying to get some here for 12 months. None of the nurseries carry it and can't be talked into trying it. Last weekend, my husband's friend was going down that way with a tow truck, and agreed to go to the mine on Monday to pick up a pallet for me. Maidenwell said they had just sent out 22 tonnes of it, and had none left - next time could we please give them a weeks warning! Hubby's friend didn't know he was going until 12 hours before he left!
Oh well. School holidays from Monday. Will drive down and bring back as much as I can fit in my car. Only a 12 hour drive!

Chris--
Excellent move...especially to retail it in multiple sizes. I echo the above post: I hope you have a lot of it in stock! I'll post the announcement on the YVBS forum if you haven't already!

Re: Diatomite now available
I am interested in the * 2.0 - 7 mm size as a trial. I have always used granite but the good reports lure me to give it a go.

Re: Diatomite now available
Hi all,
Here's some product info I found on Maidenwell Diatomite.
Cheers,
Chris
Diatomite is a natural, organic growing medium, it is lightweight, porous, non-toxic and is a horticultural growth promoting media.
Maidenwell Diatomite has been sterilized to 650 degrees C and is highly absorbent. It provides lateral movement of water and nutrient, it insulates, aerates and promotes capillary action. These features combined with the high plant available silica create a good growing environment for plants root system. Silica is widely documented as to stimulate Self Acquired Resistance (SAR) in plants, thereby increasing their resistance to disease, silica also enhances the uptake of other plant nutrients!
The high absorbency rate of diatomite granules create a water storage function, reducing the need significantly of watering requirements. It can absorb up to 150% of its own weight.
Diatomite can be used straight as a growing medium or blended with other potting mixes or mulches. It has a pH of 5.7 and Electrical conductivity of 0.05. It is lightweight with a bulk density of around 0.4, making it a good choice for use in weight critical areas such as in pots, rooftop gardens etc.
Diatomite is fossilized and will not break down over time unlike many other water storage crystals and products. It does not swell, expand or contract, it also acts as an efficient thermal insulator and when well drained minimizes root decay in plants.

I wish I could sell it at that price but the freight cost from QLD is a killer.
