Hi Steven, i'm entertaining the thought of joining for what would likely be the beginner classes. However i'm a little unsure of how well i'd be able to participate. I myself have about 8 trees, most of which are in the ground developing still, with only one mobile potted tree. How often and to what extent do students bring in their trees to work on and learn practical skills from?

G'day Truth,

It's been about 30 years since I did the beginners classes at the SOB so I'm not up to date on how they are run but there used to be theory at the beginning and practical at the end. You could always increase your amount of tree's so you had more to play with ;)

You can read the Class Programs on the school website http://sob.ausbonsai.com/NuProgramme.htm

To elaborate on Stevens post, for Beginners and intermediat, each night is a separate topic that is discussed and a demo set in a classroom format for the ist hour or so then support to restup for workshops.
The teachers then visit everyone to discuss your own trees and projects and help you out do what needs to be done.... :-)
Many do so under instruction or the teachers do and you learn as a one on one, Whichever suits the students' own preference. IMHO the more hands on the better.

You can quickly obtain new stock to work on from Cuttings and starters and the odd good purchase.

Hey Truth, that is not a problem, you have more than enough trees,I started with none, does not take long to acquire more as you go along, even from cuttings from other members,They are a very friendly group of people, most people are that grow Bonsai and a great sense of humour, go along the first night even without a tree as it is a very interesting topic every night, and Clinton knows his stuff. :imo:

Hey Ken or Steven
Is there a list of the particular teachers allocated to each night. :flag:
