Hi Graeme

I'm not aware of Ken McCarthy but the Society has a social function on this weekend and I will ask other members.

Cheers

Hi Graeme

I asked for you but no luck. As I suggested earlier, you could try Lyn at the Tasmanian Bonsai Centre in Launceston

Thank you for the effort anyhow mate. I might have a look around at Easter time. If everything goes to plan I should be spending Easter within the Hobart Showgrounds.

GREAT TALK ON PINES

At this month’s Society meeting (18 February 2014) Chris Xepapas gave an excellent talk and demonstration on pines. Pines, and other conifers, are often thought to be difficult subjects for bonsai, especially for beginners. However, it was obvious from the reaction to the talk that many members will now see these trees as being less intimidating and will be considering adding a few to their collection.

Chris is a relatively new member of the Society but he has a wealth of bonsai experience. His Heritage Bonsai Facebook page is definitely worth checking out:

BUSY TIMES!

The Bonsai Society of Southern Tasmania is having a busy few weeks. Events over a period of just 5 weeks include two monthly meetings, a dig to the southern forests to collect potential material for demonstrators at the Association of Australian Bonsai Clubs’ (AABC) National Convention to be held in Hobart in 2016, a visit to a tree nursery and four workshops conducted by Andrew Ward, an accredited AABC demonstrator who is visiting from Adelaide.

Andrew will also be doing at a demonstration at the Society’s April meeting.

ANDREW WARD RUNS VERY SUCCESSFUL WORKSHOPS AND GIVES GREAT DEMONSTRATION IN HOBART

Andrew Ward, an Association of Australian Bonsai Clubs (AABC) accredited demonstrator visited Hobart to run workshops for the Society's members on 12-13 April 2014.

The majority of the Society's members attended at least one of the four sessions, either as a participant or an observer; many members were there for the whole weekend.

Andrew provided excellent inspiration and advice on how to work and remodel trees. Andrew clearly encouraged members to be more adventurous and drastic with their trees than they would otherwise have been if they were tending their specimens alone.

A few days after the workshops, members attending the Society's April monthly meeting were held enthralled by Andrew working on a large Pyracantha.

He very ably demonstrated how standard garden material can be changed into an acceptable bonsai which, with some future work, will make a very attractive specimen.

The Pyracantha had a straight trunk which was too thick to bend. Andrew ground away some of the bark to reveal the heartwood below which gave the illusion of movement in the trunk.

Photographs from the workshop and demonstrations are posted on Galleries page of the Society's website.

CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS XEPAPAS

The Society is delighted to announce that one of its members, Chris Xepapas has been appointed by the Association of Australian Bonsai Clubs Inc (AABC) as a Level 2 National Bonsai Demonstrator for the AABC Visiting Tutor Program.

Chris runs the Heritage Bonsai Nursery which he has recently relocated to Dysart on the Midland Highway, about 40 km north of Hobart.

Chris' enthusiasm and knowledge of bonsai, and especially conifers, have already benefited members of the Society. It is good to learn that a wider audience will now appreciate his bonsai skills.

Well done Chris.

Hi, just a query anyone of your members done anything with the Huon pine. I have bought some seeds, that will be stratified firstly. We get cold winters here and I will not let the seedlings, if any grow, outside until the nights get a bit warmer, we are minus C right now. I live in Armidale NSW on the Northern Tablelands. Any help will be appreciated. I know they are slow growers. But I like their history. Someone said a cutting would fare better. Bit difficult if there are no grown trees around, eh?

Your trees are magical. Thanks for sharing.

Pat from Armidale.

Hi Pat

By far the best person to answer your query is Will Fletcher. Will is a member of the Bonsai Society of Southern Tasmania (BSST) and runs Island Bonsai, a nursery specialising exclusively on Tasmania trees and shrubs as bonsai. You can find his contact details on the Island Bonsai website: http://www.islandbonsai.com.au/contactus.html

Best wishes

NOEL - WE SALUTE YOU!

When the Bonsai Society of Southern Tasmania was founded in April 1984, Noel Kemp was elected as the inaugural Vice-President. Three years later, in 1987, Noel became the Society's President, a position he held continuously until this year.

During the 27 years of his Presidency, Noel has guided the Society with a steady hand and encouraged many new bonsai aficionados. For many years, he taught adult education classes in bonsai; many students of these classes continued their interest through membership of the Society. Noel's enthusiasm and knowledge about all things bonsai has been invaluable to the Society.

It was some sadness, on his part and that of members, that Noel reported at the recent AGM that he was not standing for re-election. The vast majority of members cannot remember a time when Noel was not the Society's President.

Noel, we thank you for all the many benefits you have brought to the Society as President. You may no longer be the highest office bearer, but we know that your support for the Society will not diminish. — with Noel Kemp.

BONSAI & GARDEN SALE

For our more local friends in and around Hobart, the Society is holding a Bonsai & Garden Sale on Saturday, 29 November 2014. Details of the opening times and location will be announced soon.

There will be a huge range of items for purchase, all at great prices. On the bonsai front, there will be trained trees, starter material, a huge range of pots and wire. You can also get as much free advice as you need to help you develop any tress that you buy!

For the garden, there will an array of flowering and ornamental plants, succulents, advanced vegetable plants such as tomatoes and egg plants, and lots of herbs; all at prices so much lower than you would pay elsewhere. And if you are looking for a few extra pots for the patio or garden, then we may have just the ones for you.
