Bonsai Society of Southern Tasmania - Hobart

Post by BonsaiRob »

The Bonsai Society of Southern Tasmania is the southernmost bonsai society in Australia. The Society's website is http://www.bonsai-southern-tasmania.org.au

Members of the Society are bonsai enthusiasts in Hobart and surrounds; they range from the absolute novice through to the experienced and very talented expert.

The Bonsai Society of Southern Tasmania meets monthly, on the third Tuesday of the month, from February through to November.

Meetings are held at the Bellerive Community Arts Centre (17 Cambridge Road, Bellerive, Tasmania 7018) and start at 7.30 pm. You are welcome to attend as a guest before joining the Society.

At the monthly meetings, members display trees and exchange ideas and advice. Often, there is also a demonstration of a particular bonsai technique.

The Society also holds 5-6 workshops each year from Autumn through to Spring. Members work on their trees and share knowledge and ideas. The Workshops are for members only. They are held on a Saturday or Sunday.

Hi Rob,

thanks for the post, I have just moved to tasmania and I am very keen to come along to a meeting in the near future. I have been inspired by the local flora and am keen to have a go with some of the native confers. I am also keen to try with the deciduous beach northofagus gunii. I visited island bonsai this month and was very pleased to see the trees on display and the stock available!

Regards,
Jarryd.

Thanks Jarryd.

I look forward to you joining the Society. Our next meeting is in February.

Will, who runs Island Bonsai, is a very active member and is incredibly knowledgeable about Tasmania natives as bonsai.

Society's Bonsai Show a big success

Post by BonsaiRob »

The Society’s Spring Bonsai Show was held at the Rosny Barn on 19-20 October 2013.

Over 60 excellent trees were on display and attracted many positive comments from the hundreds of visitors over the weekend.

The Society holds its shows every 18 months. This year it was a spring show; the next one will be an autumn show, probably in April 2015.

Visitors to the Society's recent show voted this tree as the "Best in Show.
It is a silver banksia (Banksia marginata ). It is an Australian native. This particular tree is a small leaved, small flowered form of the species.
This specimen was grown from a cutting taken in 2001; it has been in training since 2006.

As well as our web site (http://www.bonsai-southern-tasmania.org.au), the Society now has a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bonsai-S ... 4507299015). It is new but will grow, like our trees, with time!

Can any of the Tasmanian's tell me if there is a guy namded Ken McCarthy involved in the Bonsai world down that way?

I worked with him at a Military establishment in Ingleburn NSW during '84-'86 and I believe he moved to Tassie after he left the Navy. Anyone know him (or know of him)?
