Hi Rhiannon,
Simon is good to deal with. His family owns a bonsai pottery in China (so he tells us) so he imports direct and has low pot prices. Pots, potting mix, etc all good. He seems to buy trees and resell with less markup than some. Not sure of the depth of his bonsai styling knowledge as i have not had the opportunity to put it to the test.

Rhiannon I'm also a complete newbie to this whole bonsai game, but went out to this nursery the other day and they seemed friendly/knowledgeable/nice...advised me to not buy one that I'd picked out (too tricky for a beginner after that heat we had!). I put my name down for a class - sounded like a cost-effective way to not kill any plants!

I just wanted to ask the educated masses of the Northern 'Burbs if any have visited this nursery and if so how reputable it is?

As stated in the into thread, I got a bonsai for Christmas, which happened to be from this nursery (though sold from a stall in a plaza). I want to delve into the world of bonsai but keep seeing warnings about making sure your dealer is reputable. I wanna get good soil for potential bonsais, so was wondering if these guys can be trusted. I'm going there tomorrow to get some wire for my Jac, maybe some pots, and am considering picking up some soil if they're okay.

They have some really impressive looking bonsais there, but in my inexperience I don't know the tell-tale signs of a good/bad dealer.

They are fine. They even give a discount if you buy lots of stuff. They seem like very honest people. Family run business.

just wanted to let people know I went down to Williams Nurery the other week and they have closed down, not sure about the classes but the property has been sold and cleared out (they were dragging out the last bits and peices). Such a shame this was one of those oldschool rambling type nurseries that oozed inspiration, prices on nothing just lots of unique and native relics! Ted's expertise and collection will be missed...

just wanted to save anyone an unecessary trip. Happy Bonsai hunting

That is a shame. I am sorry to hear that I wonder what has happened to Ted and his Trees.

Does anyone know of any in the Warragul/Moe/Morwell/Traralgon areas? Just moved to the area from Melb and am have not found a thing out this way.

hi Shibui. Judy and I have settled well in Tumbarumba. Looking forward to going to Tumbafest today. Very busy with things being done to the house. I visited the bonsaid nursery in Albury last week. Do you have a webb site for your nursery?

Hi Shibui. It is now over four months and Judy and I have settled in to Tumba very well. Over the last few nights had our first heavy frosts. I have moved all my figs, bougies and a wisteria under cover. I think the buxus, elms and JBP and maples should be alright outside. Is that right?

Also how much notice do I need to give you to visit your and your nursery in Victoria and how do I get there?

Orient Bonsai Nursery has been around for probably 20 years now, so they can't be too bad
They Opened their new updated shop at Christmas ish - February maybe? (same address) and have bought in a new stock of pots etc, they still have a few of the cheap nasty looking pots, but as a whole its looking a heap better now.

I think Chojo is good to wonder around and see some good specimens ...and improving all the time.

Pure amateur view but I’ll always visit if I find myself in the Dandenong Ranges.

Hi Guys, I would like to add my own nursery Hakuju-En

[What's in a Name?

The name, Hakuju-en 伯樹園, Hakuju-en is a combination of two Japanese Kanji characters. The first, 伯 Haku, is defined as 'superior' or 'senior'. The second, 樹 Ju, translates to 'tree(s)'.

The final character, en (園), means garden or nursery. Thus the name Hakuju-en is brought to life, representing the garden's endeavour to uphold a superior level of bonsai within the nursery, and the hope to help lift Australia's bonsai level as a whole.

The physical nursery is currently under construction, and its due to be open towards the end of 2019. This nursery will be open by appointment only, however the online sales will always be open.

Congratulations Matt, good luck with the venture. What suburb is the proposed nursery?
For those who do not know Matt his work is always of a very high standard, I have been impressed with his detailed wiring and talent for design. His Japanese training is highly evident.

Hey Josh. Good advice here from Ken. While I am a member of the Yarra Valley Bonsai Society, I can speak very highly of the Warragul group. Friendly, knowledgeable and experienced Bonsai folk. Reach out and say hi to them. I am sure they’ll welcome you with open arms and a few laughs too.
