Canberra nurseries?

Hi , I'm new to bonsai and looking for somewhere around the Canberra area where I can buy a few trees ? Any help or advice would be great

There have been several nurseries specialising in bonsai material in and around Canberra but they don't seem to last long. Seems there just is not enough demand to sustain such a niche market there at this stage.

You do have 2 good bonsai clubs where you will find members who have excess trees that they are happy to sell or give to new members. Both clubs have an annual exhibition which includes sales tables. Wherever you are bonsai show trading tables are a great source of good bonsai material. You have just missed the Weston Creek show this year. Canberra Bonsai Society show will be in Spring but should not be missed for great inspiration from bonsai on show, club trading table, several commercial traders who travel to Canberra especially for this event and regular talks and demonstrations from experienced bonsai growers.

Welcome Pie,

I'm in Canberra as well. Canberra Bonsai Society meet 1st Saturday of every month at Hughes Community Centre from 9am. Your most welcome to come along and listen in, ask questions. Some of the members bring along excess or young cuttings to sell cheap or as freebies. I've grab a Trident Maple & a few privets. They are only young plants, but great to learn on. They also have a great library to borrow books and a small tools sale table.

I'm new to Bonsai myself. I tend to visit that big green hardware store, and the two main nurseries at Pialligo (Rods or Willows). I look for sale stock mainly. I try to stay within $10 - $15 if I can, but generally come out empty handed, (saving for proper tools). You can get lucky on the odd occasion. Picked up a couple of scraggly lookin Maples about a month ago that were cheap. Their just hangin out waiting to go to sleep for winter before I put them in training pots and cut them back.

Again on Pialligo Road there is "Cool Climate Trees" or something like it, first on the left as you turn into P Rd. Large number of useful native tube stock species, some larger if you are feeling adventurous.

Club is highly recommended - a full calendar of demonstrations and workshops. Friendly, not snobbish.

When I started out in Bonsai I use to go to the local nurseries and hardware stores in Canberra and the material was expensive for what you get.

Spent a small fortune on very basic material and got very little variety.

Since moving to Sydney I'm amazing at what is available for the price, definitely worth the road trip. Lots of starters, trunks, developed trees, and variety. They are missing trees that do prefer the cooler climate though.

Really looking forward to the AusBonsai Market coming up! Never been to one.

Canberra Bonsai Society make a bus trip to Sydney each year so members can get access to larger, specialist nurseries. I note in the recent newsletter that they are currently taking names for this year's trip.
