Is there much of bonsai happening in India. I am headed to India in March and would love to add some elements on bonsai to my trip. Found a few newspaper articles with names of people but no way to contact them or maybe details of nurseries where one can go and see some.

Massive Convention called Bonsai Namaste, there was a Bjorn Bjorholm video last year where he was working on some huge landscapes with Mauro and some locals.

The convention website mite be a good place to start to try find out about the local scene though.

Tony Bebb is going this months end, he may be able to help.

That sounds good but I'll miss it by 2 weeks.

Pup I wish I could ask Tony Webb to keep an eye out for bonsai artist in Chandigarh. That is where I will be based for 2 weeks.

Friends from India have told me they regularly saw people training trees, especially ficus as bonsai but usually for their own interest. More recently interest has been growing and there is a more organised culture emerging.

The Bonsai Today magazine 145 featured an article on the group in Pune near Mumbai who are organising the Bonsai Namaste event.

A search using 'bonsai Chandigarh' turns up a few results including Banzai Bonsai, Chandigarh, India and several nurseries claiming to be bonsai dealers so there should be somewhere to start talking to people who are interested which should lead to more contacts while you are there.

just as an aside, last year most of the demonstrations were streamed live, and then listed for viewing afterwards. A boon for those of us who might be hoping to see tropical trees being worked on!
