Here is another great place in Terrey Hills, Sydney

This is where I get most of my stuff but if anyone knows places closer to Sydney city that would be much appreciated

Hi Laethe,

How close to the city? There is a small nursery tucked away in Balmain called Bonsai & Beyond at 427 Darling St. They have a nice selection of trees and they also run classes. The last time I visited they had a Wollemi pine to die for. Also Koreshoff's nursery in Castle Hill though I heard a rumour that they were thinking of closing down

There is also Bonsai South 114 The Boulevarde Caringbah. Hope this helps.

You need to get out more mate. Koreshoffs closed down a fair while ago now.

Bonsai and Beyond trades to those who don't know bonsai and don't mind the financial loss when an expensive tree dies. The best nursery close to Sydney would be Bonsai South in Caringbah. Open 7 days, good stock plants, pots, tools. The basic soil the stock plants are in is far better for aerating roots than that of Bonsai and Beyond. Sorry to be negative about B&B but it's the sad truth. Two of us did a foot patrol at B&B in November and came away with no alteration of opinion.

I have not been to the Caringbah one so will have to check it out, though dont know how much closer it would be the Terrey Hills, I am at Chippendale/Broadway area.

I went to B&B at the end of last year and thought it was pretty average, but will have another look next time I am around Balmain

Much more worth wile making the trip to Ray Nesci or Bonsai South. Although Megumi does have some very nice trees of her own, her nursry does not even compare to Ray's or Leong's. Was there today and nothing has changed. I always get the feeling the trees are slightly overpriced for their development.

I continue to laud Ray Nesci in Dural and Leong Kwong's Bonsai South in Caringbah as the best two nurseries in Sydney. Healthy stock, good selection, good pots and friendly and helpful staff.

If you are in Chippendale Bonsai South is going to be your Waterloo. Your bank account will slip in theirs because there is a lot of good stuff there and it is only 25 minutes from you. Much closer than the north shore. Bonsai South is a too regular stop of mine. Sometimes, like yesterday, there is nothing that inspires me. Not to say that there was nothing inspiring... just not what I was looking for. But juvenile, advanced, super dooper... you can get it an Leong's. Give it a go and hate me for it.

I'm visiting Sydney in a couple of weeks... could someone please tell me which place would be easiest to get to by taxi from the CBD (Darling Harbour) - Nesci or Bonsai South? How long am I looking at here? Half an hour trip?

It wouldn't be Ray's by taxi unless you have deep pockets...

Bonsaisouth is a possibility but it depends on how much you want to spen on a taxi...it is near the airport so 30mins from the CBD

My bad... it is about 30mins from the CBD but it is more near Cronulla...just checked whereis

Bonsai South is more like 45 from the CBD and 30 from the Airport, I used to live just down the road and drive it everyday both in peak and off-peak. Last time I did a taxi from CBD to Caringbah it was $60. Having said that, it is the best nursery in Sydney I think.

I went out to Rays today and bought the perfect Azalea stock plant for some design scheme in my head but it was a hell of a drive. I think Ray is slightly cheaper but Leong is laid out better and definitely closer. Leong also has some incredible plants there and very good stock plants.....(I'll never be able to do that...sniff sniff).

Out of interest, you can't take plant material on board and interstate, can you? Say if I buy a small shohin planted in potting mix.....
