The Annual Sydney Bonsai Spectacular at Merrylands RSL has, sadly, come to an end.
Our organisers have been advised by the RSL that they are no longer in a position to support the event having regard to the cost and competing priorities.
I took the liberty, on behalf of everyone who has supported and enjoyed this event in recent years, to thank the RSL for its generous support in the past.
So, let the search begin for another opportunity to showcase and promote Bonsai!

Re: Sydney Bonsai Spectacular - Cancelled
With such an obviously community focussed event, surely a local government organisation in the area would support such an event through use of a community centre as an appropriate venue? I'd be doing my homework by shopping around for such opportunities before I declared the whole show finished!
After roughly 20 years of growing bonsai, I reckon I might just be starting to get the hang of it...

How many visitors passed thru the doors?
If an entry fee was charged would that reduce the numbers?
how much would it have to be to cover costs of the venue?
What about sponsorship?

Gold coin for every tree that you want to show and then a gold coin for entry - you'd be surprised!

I personally like the idea of sponsorship. The sponsors could be given an area to set up a trade display, would work well for fertiliser companies or even bonsai nurseries-they could then have a selling area?kcpoole wrote:I agree. You could always make the entry fee "optional" to avoid turning off people.

It is certainly sad to see the end of this breakthrough by an RSL into the world of Art and culture over the usual mix of mundane pursuits.
Let us hope that the torch can be passed on to keep the idea alive and .......
let's not forget to thank all the members of the Bonsai community who also put in a great deal of time , energy and creativity to
produce such outstanding displays.

Don't give up ! Look around every dark cloud etc.etc.
Goulburn Bonsai Society were given notice seven weeks out from our Exhibition last year that the planned venue wasn't going to be available.
Did we panic? You bet we did. BUT we found an even better venue and had one of the best Exhibitions for many a year.
