Sorry if i missed this, but how did he attach the wood upside down?

It was attached with a screw. BTW, this piece of deadwood was added not only to provide interest, but also to compensate for a tendency towards an inverse taper in the lower part of the trunk.

Lisa, I really like the big Black Pine (with the girl in the photo). I think a larger pot would improve it though, what do you think.

You may be right. Funny, the size of the pot didn't strike me before. I checked on the potting of JBPs in Kokufu-ten albums and it is curious to see how the various trees are potted, i.e. sometimes not at all according to the rules we learned. I guess each artist has his own idea of what looks good with a particular tree, and doesn't worry about anything else. Mind you, they stop short of using glazed pots with conifers.
If Jow is still around, maybe he can shed some light on this question.

Lisa, Those old JBPs in the Kokufu albums have such well developed rootsystems, they could probably be potted into shot glasses and survive :D .
