Sydney Royal Easter Show Bonsai Competition

Post by SouthernSky »

FYI for those of you who don't already know - the Bonsai display is the 3rd and 4th. If you're planning on popping by the Easter Show (at $36 a ticket...) then it might be worth coming during these two days.

Thanks Southern Sky.

Would be good if someone posted all details before now. Someone did comment that you have to get there so early and strict restrictions that it is not worth the effort.
Can anyone post a link to the info for entering this show and days of exhibition.
I went on Tues and couldn't find any bonsai untill I found someone that knew about the schedule.(surely there is enough room for a permanent display for the duration of the show.)
Can't seem to find anything on show site about the exhibit times.
Cheers.

Technically it's a competition, not an exhibition - so entries need to be submitted by early March. I'm expecting to do well, even though I won't be bringing in any of my larger pieces (the ones that tend to win "Champion") since I'll be limited to trees that I can carry in and out by myself. That said, I'm hoping to pick up at least a couple of Firsts and Seconds

The duration of the Easter show is divided a series of "Sessions", so before us came the Bridal displays and Bromeliads in the fourth session, and we'll make way for Carnivorous plants, Fruit and Vegetables and Orchids in the sixth session. The display's up for two days, and from what I've heard the number of entries dropped dramatically on the days where it was a single day since nobody trusts each other not to just go in and steal each other's trees.

Entries fall into one of several Classes -
512 - Bonsai, any style, under 30cm high
513 - One bonsai, informal, upright
514 - One bonsai, cascade or semi-cascade
515 - Bonsai in flower or fruit
516 - One bonsai, root over rock
517 - Bonsai, ficus (any style)
518 - Bonsai, Australian Native (other than fig) (any style)
519 - Bonsai, any other style
520 - Group Planting
521 - Saikei

then Champion Bonsai and Champion Australian Native Bonsai selected from the winning entries.

I think the problem is security, and having someone prepared to monitor the setup for the duration, thus it makes a 2 day event safer and more manageable. This is what I've heard in the past. We aren't going until later in the month, but I'd think it would be more geared to try and get new people interested, rather than the converted. I know that personally....trying to get my son to look at random trees, whilst the screaming and laughter of rides is off in the distance would mean I wouldn't get a glimpse of the trees.

I style Bonsai naturally, just as they would appear in the wild.

The angle of the Wollemi Pine in this photo doesn't really do it justice - once all the wire comes out it should look pretty awesome.

For some reason I can't see the photos, is anyone else having problems?

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

I took them down - I'm sure someone will get some photos up from the competition itself tomorrow. I'm not sure what to think - the last time I did this contest there were so many entrants, but this year's entire display will come from just five competitors.

It appears AQ's bonsai expertise was fully recognised at the 2015 Royal Easter Show and justifiably rewarded on its merits.

I've just been made aware of the results, and I'm sure I'll have more to say on this particular issue once I've considered my position.

I went today-no pics but just a quick browse.
Display was nice and a good variety of trees. Lots of "general public" oohing and ahhing. Would've been nice to have tree ID's but understand exhibitors are not the ones making the rules. (The only ones that had labels were with the Sydney city bonsai club)
@southernsky keen to hear what the results are
