Sensation at BSV

Post by Gerard »

There has been a recent change to the agenda for tonight's meeting at Bonsai Society of Victoria. I am looking forward to seeing the presentation by Tien from Bonsai Sensation Nursery.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Sorry I didn't get there Tien. I'm sure it was very good but it was raining when I had to leave, I was hungry, the car needed petrol and I had to pump up the tires and I had 2 Game of Thrones discs looking at me.

I enjoyed the presentation, Tien explained a few techniques about wiring and branch shaping which are often brushed over. I have a greater appreciation of the work that goes on in a commercial bonsai nursery. It is not just a plant nursery these are grown to be bonsai. I believe Tien will be selling trees at the AABC convention in Adelaide.

Where are you going to find time for Game of thrones Tien, with all those trees to work on?!

The presentation was very good! Going by the questions asked during, and the discussions afterwards I think everyone got something out of it. A few people seemed very interested in your branch undercutting technique. Other points of interested for those that missed it, from memory:

-observing how branches grow in nature and why
-replicating that when wiring
-building taper in branching
-building secondary branching and how to avoid structure problems by correct pruning and branch selection.
...much more that I can't recall at the moment!

hi Gerard
i hope you don't mind, after reading through your notes on the BSV website, i'd like to make some clarifications.
1. •Branch development techniques do vary from species to species. Top growth in the White Pine below has been constantly trimmed to encourage growth in the lower branches. This approach will not work with a cedar.
with cedars, i still would keep the strong top growth trimmed back to maintain the strength of the low branches. once the back buds died, they will not bud back in my experience.
2.•Early spring and late summer are considered the best times to work on pines and cedars.
because these are the times to bud select and thin out old needles. once the branches have this treatment, it makes wiring alot easier.
3. •Leave wiring as long as is necessary to set the branch provided it is not cutting in.
i was mainly refering to cedars. i would usually allow wire to bite in a little because they are very slow to set in shape.
:tu: :tu:
kind regards

Tien
