5th Symposium on Australian Plants as Bonsai

As Grant indicated in another thread, the Symposium on Australian Plants as Bonsai is returning to Canberra this year, and will again be held at the Australian National Botanic Gardens on 27 & 28 February, together with the 12th Exhibition of Australian Plants as Bonsai. The earlier than normal timing is due to venue availability.

This year, the Symposium theme will be Developing Better Australian Bonsai. The theme developed from an observation by a CBS member that he admired the graceful branches on some Australian bonsai, and wished he knew how to achieve it. So presentations, demonstrations and workshops this year will focus on structural development and development of Australian shohin. The demonstrations and workshops will use a range of species, so there should be something to appeal to everyone.

We have some new presenters this year. Peter Hanrahan from Canberra, Hugh Grant from the NSW Central Coast and Doug Harris from Illawarra Bonsai Society will join Gavin Gostelow, Grant Bowie, Roger Hnatiuk and Ruth McLucas who have been involved in previous symposia in Canberra.

For those who are also involved with the NBPCA, this is the weekend before the visit to the NBPCA by Czech artist Pavel Slovak, so you might be able to make it an extended stay! We’re hoping that Pavel will make it to the Exhibition on Sunday to see some of our great Australian bonsai.

Well, it's less than three weeks till registrations close for the Symposium and workshop places are going quickly - so get in soon if you want to secure a place.

There are currently

• 3 places left on Workshop 1 - Structural development - with Grant Bowie

• 1 place left on Workshop 3 - Shohin development with Doug Harris and

• 4 places left on Workshop 2 - the open workshop with Hugh Grant

The Eucalypt roundtable is a less formal event, so we haven't set a limit on the number of 'registrations for that segment of the weekend.

And it's less than five weeks till the actual events. If you can't make it to the Symposium, maybe you have a couple of hours to visit the Exhibition. Despite the hail which has caused some damage over the last few days, we are expecting a great display of Australian plants, as well as another progression series showing the development of bonsai over a number of years.

There are only a few places left in workshops - so if you want to do one, you'll need to get in quickly.

Workshop 3 - Shohin development is fully subscribed.
- If you were hoping to do that workshop, you can email us at cbsshow@cbs.org.au to get your name on a wait list in case anyone cancels.

There are 2 places left on Workshop 1 - Structural development and 3 on Workshop 4 - open workshop.

If you miss out on a place in the workshops, remember that symposium participants can observe workshops for free.

The final details are being organised, and we're looking forward to meeting both the symposium participants and visitors to the exhibition.

Not long now until registrations close for the Symposium . Remember they need to be in by midnight on 18 February which is Thursday, just 4 days away.

There is still one place available in Workshop 1 - Structural development (Grant B) and 2 in Workshop 4 - Open workshop (Hugh G).
- We are keeping wait-lists where workshops are full in case of last minute cancellations. So if your preferred workshop is full, you can sign up for one of those with places available and/or email cbsshow@cbs.org.au to ask to be put on the wait-list.

We haven't put a limit on the number of people who can join the Eucalypt roundtable, as it won't run as a normal workshop. While Peter, Hugh and Doug will of course contribute their knowledge and experiences, we're hoping that it will also be an opportunity for participants to share ideas and experiences with each other. So unless we are inundated with people wanting to join in, it is open to everyone who is interested.

If you have registered for the workshops, and are planning to bring your own tree/s to work on, or are planning to enter a tree or trees in the exhibition, please remember that all plant material going into the Australian National Botanic Gardens must be inspected by ANBG staff. (see http://www.cbs.org.au )
- Inspection will take place on Friday afternoon - and all trees must be delivered to the ANBG by 4:15 on Friday 26 Feb.
- There's no capacity to inspect trees arriving over the weekend, so please don't arrive with trees on Saturday or Sunday. We'll just have to ask you to take them back off-site which we don't want to do .

Not long now, and, scarily, everything seems to be coming together well. I'm just waiting for whatever is going to go awry!

There's just over 48 hour until registrations for the 2016 Symposium close. So if you're still thinking about coming, now is the time to get your rego and payment in!

There are just 2 places left on Workshop 4 (with Hugh), the two other workshops are fully subscribed. If you register for the Symposium, you can observe any of the workshops, and of course join in the Eucalypt Roundtable group on Saturday.

Should be great weather for the weekend, and there's lot's on in town (including Bonsai Week at the Arboretum) if you're planning a longer stay.

Time's almost up - registrations need to be in tonight if you want to be part of the weekend.

There are still 2 places available on the open workshop with Hugh Grant. This is a great opportunity to progress an Australian bonsai that you already have (provided you can deliver it to the ANBG by 4:15 on Friday 26 Feb) or start a new one using the stock plants that will be available on the weekend.

And of course it's a great chance to build your knowledge of Australian plants as bonsai through the presentations and demonstrations and talking with others at the Symposium sessions.

The exhibition is also shaping up to be a great display, and will include trees from the central coast, Illawarra area, Bendigo and , of course, Canberra.

So don't miss out! get those registrations in tonight.

CBS will be putting up photos of all the trees in the exhibition on there website as they do every year. Also all presentations were filmed. There was talk about making them available. I didn't take photos of the exhibition or symposium, but have notes and may put something together when I have time.

Well the weekend is over, and we hope everyone who attended the symposium or visited the exhibition had a great time. It was great to meet all those who came for the first time, and to catch up with the repeat participants.

As Dan mentioned below the 'official' photos of the exhibition will go up shortly on the CBS website under 'Native Show Gallery'' together with as many photos of the symposium as we can find.

And yes we'll see what we can do to put up the video of the symposiom sessions for those who were'nt there, but may be able to load only stills from the video onto the website.

Our thanks to all the demonstrators/ presenters without who the symposium wouldn't have been... or been as good as it was. So thanks again to Peter, Doug, Hugh, Roger, Grant, Roger, Ruth and Gavin.
