Australian Plants as Bonsai Symposia & Exhibitions

As you may know, Canberra Bonsai Society (CBS), and more recently the Victorian Native Bonsai Society (VNBC) have, since 2003, hosted annual exhibitions of Australian Plants as Bonsai and, since 2011, associated symposia.
• Both trees and photographs included in the exhibitions since 2003 have been sourced from as far as north Queensland, New South Wales including
Sydney and regional centres, regional Victoria, Hobart, South Australia and Western Australia.
• Participants at symposia have been drawn from similar locations.

The Australian Plants as Bonsai exhibitions were conceived as a ‘national’ event that reached out to the growers of Australian species as bonsai across the whole country. The symposia, when established in 2011, had a similar national focus.

Based on the success of the very successful hosting of the symposia and associated exhibitions by the VNBC in 2015 and 2017, CBS invites other bonsai groups to consider hosting one of these events in the future.
• In particular, we would like to hear from anyone interested in hosting the 2018 event.

While CBS greatly enjoys hosting this event, and plans to host the national symposia and exhibitions periodically, we see our role in the future as moving to coordination to ensure the continuation of these events.

To assist organisations to decide whether they would like to host this event, attached is some background information and an outline of the events as they have been run to date. This is not a prescription for how the event needs to be in the future and creative ideas and approaches are encouraged.
