Post by NBPCA »

Hi Everyone

Very exciting news to come out very soon about Bonsai Week 2018.
The event is moving along in leaps and bounds and will be bigger and better than ever.

2018 will see a number of big improvements including the introduction of not one, but two international artists plus an additional very special international guest.
There will be more workshops, more attractions and more activities.

Stay tuned for more information very soon.

Information about the artists:

Carlos van der Vaart:

Carlos van der Vaart lives in Holland, he was born in Maassluis, a city near Rotterdam.
He works half weeks as a interim manager and the other half weeks in his bonsai studio “The Bonsai Factory”; which was founded in 2007, a few years later he realised his bonsai shop “basics4u.nl”.
Carlos began to take interest in bonsai when he bought a small tree at a local flower shop, this was in 1992. He started to read all the books that where available and joined a local club.
After winning the European New Talent competition in Germany in 1996, he got more and more involved in the bonsai scene.
All his trees have won different national and international awards. He has performed more than 1000 workshops and demonstrations all over Europe and other Continents. Because of his many travels he has refined his technique and knowledge in bonsai.
He works with all species, but pines and junipers are his favourite.
He is a “full” member of “Nippon Bonsai Sakka Kyookai Europe”; the Japanese Organisation for Bonsai Artists; they showed Carlos the real meaning of bonsai in life and this shows in his work.
Carlos holds weekly lessons in his studio for groups, each group has no more than 5 people, focussing on absolute quality; this way students gain more and more knowledge. Most of his students have won prizes.
For Carlos bonsai has become a way of life.

Carlos has a website here: http://www.carlosvandervaart.com/

Yannick Kiggen

Yannick has been doing bonsai for 11 years. He has been guided by Kunio Koboyashi, Takeo Kawabe, Hotsumi Terakawa, Mario Komsta, Jean-Paul Polmans, Pius Notter, and Francois Jeker.

He has been invited to exhibit his trees at the Noelanders Trophy and Ginkgo Award. Yannick was one of 70 of the world’s best bonsai artists invited to Nanxun, China for the Bonsai Without Borders Global Summit.

In 2011 Yannick started the Yama Bonsai Studio to promote and share his knowledge of bonsai to beginners and more experienced bonsai lovers.

Yannick has a website here: http://www.yama-bonsai.be/

Ofer Grunwald

Ofer Grunwald is a 35 year old bonsai practitioner working mainly in Israel and Europe. He has been doing bonsai for about a decade, but his professional training began in 2008, when he started studying under Italian master artisan Enrico Savini, and his Progetto Futuro bonsai school (http://www.progettofuturobonsai.it ). Enrico and Progetto Futuro quickly became one of the dominant and most influential schools in Western bonsai. In recent years, Progetto Futuro have driven the revolution of modern bonsai in Europe, re-defining the art-form across the continent.

Since 2010, Ofer has been working in close collaboration with the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens to promote and develop bonsai in Israel. To this end, in 2011, they established the Botanical Gardens Bonsai Award and Conference – an annual event serving as Israel’s national bonsai exhibition.
The event provides Israeli practitioners an opportunity to showcase their work to the public, while transforming public awareness and conceptions about the art. The event also seeks to raise the artistic level of Israeli bonsai, through lectures and demonstrations by leading international bonsai artists, who visit Israel specifically to take part in the exhibition.
In 2012, Ofer was asked to curate the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens’ bonsai collection, re-invent it, and develop it into a modern, sculptural collection. In 2013, he was recognized as an official partner in Progetto Futuro’s management, an important milestone in his efforts to train and cultivate a new generation of practitioners by providing lessons and workshops to both complete beginners and those seeking to further their skills.
Today, alongside his ongoing bonsai work, Ofer is constantly striving to push the limits of our medium, and to take bonsai to new artistic heights both locally, and internationally.

This looks like being a fabulous week, I wish you every success!

Just wondering if anyone here knows how their club works out who is nominated for this event. Is it a committee decision without any member input? Is it put to a vote by the members?

Does your club even participate in nominating for this event?

I can understand there could be a low uptake for interstate clubs, however there does seem to be a quite enthusiastic group of people who like to attend overseas conferences....

Any insight would be appreciated....

Hi Mel,
At our club the executive get together and nominate one member who they believe has the tree(s) and aptitude to benefit from such an opportunity.
Looks good this year with the opportunity to work with two professionals perhaps with two different trees?

Thanks for the explanation, Watto, appreciated!

I'd be interested to know how other clubs deal with it too. Agree that the opportunity should go to someone who will benefit, and hopefully come back to the club and give a talk on what they've seen and learned?
