Melbourne - Robert Stevens Workshops and Demonstration

Post by DavidN »

Hi All
Bonsai Northwest in Yarraville Melbourne will be hosting workshops and a Demonstration by Robert Stevens from the 31st October - Monday 2nd Novemeber. Workshops will be held on the Saturday morning and afternoon, Sunday morning and Monday morning. A Demonstration will be held on the Sunday Afternoon which will be $5 at the door. I hope Melbournians take up this opportunity to see Robert up close and watch him work his magic. He will also have copies of his latest book for sale at the Sunday Demonstration. I have attached a booking form and more information for anyone interested.
Thanks
David

maximum of 8 participants will bring their own (decent quality) stock for initial styling or established bonsai for restyle.
I expect Robert Steven would spend 10 minutes or so with each participant advising on style and continue to help with styling for 2-3 hours as he moves around the room.
you would be expected to supply your own tree, wire, raffia, tools etc. most supplies will be available to purchase at reasonable prices.
A great learning experience, hardest thing is to find a good tree, then you basically let the demonstrator make the calls, sometimes a demonstrator will suggest a major chop, if you are not prepared for this a backup tree can be handy.
I will participate myself, Roberts work is highly regarded.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Can anybody recommend were to find a good range of good quality stock in the melb metro area?

I know of Baloc (have bought from him before) which is good. I have also been to orient bonsai in Reservoir, which is not bad.

This is probably not be best thread to ask this question, but I'm booked in for the Robert Steven Worshop but I'm not sure what to bring. I only have maybe one tree worth bringing.

Thanks

You are very much in luck as we Bonsai Northwest are having our Exhibition on the 24th and 25th October and we have one of the best ranges of stock available to choose from. I've been in charge of the sales area for a number of years now and it is always over stocked with very reasonably priced bonsai, bonsai stock and nursery material. You are definitely bound to find something here. Find me and I'll help you source something.

baloc has a good assortment of larger juni's which i believe would suit a RS workshop. :D

Hey David

I was wondering for the workshops, is it possible for me to pay at the door when attending workshops as an observer only?
This is as I am uncertain about my availability to attend the workshops to see (trying to attend Saturday and Monday workshops)

Thanks

Hi Kelv,
There shouldn't be a problem to pay at the door as an observer.

We had a great day of workshops today. Another one tomorrow morning and a demonstration tomorrow afternoon. Robert has picked out two big trees to demonstrate on and should be awesome. Demonstration is from 1:30 to 4:30 Sunday at the Yarraville club at 135 Stephen st Yarraville.

Highly recommended! I worked on a large Juniper with Robert this morning and had a great time.

Robert started the session with a lengthy talk on finding the tree within the tree, finding the most favourable viewing angle and achieving balance in your tree. Throughout the morning, he would occasionally stop everything, go to the whiteboard and talk about a particular aspect of tree design. Onlookers got as much, if not more, out of the day than the participants themselves!

If you are in Melbourne tomorrow and have time to get down to the Yarraville Club, please consider joining as an onlooker.

Thanks to David N, Quentin and the others who lent a hand to get my tree done today....I appreciate your help very much
