2018 Australian Plants as Bonsai sympsoium and exhibition

Post by JenniferM »

The 7th APaB Symposium and the 2018 APaB exhibition will be held at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra on 17-18 March.

We are very pleased to welcome Andrew Edge from the Central Coast Bonsai Society to the presentation team for the symposium this year, and to welcome back Roger Hnatiuk, Gavin Gostelow and Doug Harris who have been involved previously.

The symposium will celebrate the value of less well known, and used, Australian species as bonsai.

The keynote presentation this year ‘Less treading here, please!’ will be delivered by Roger Hnatiuk and will be complemented by a panel presentation where people who are working with less commonly used species will to share their experiences.

This year there will be three workshops, one on Saturday afternoon and two on Sunday afternoon

The Saturday afternoon workshop will be a critique style workshop using less commonly used species and led by Roger and Gavin. All symposium participants will be able to sit in on these discussions, see the progress in styling during the afternoon and hear further discussions as each tree comes back for review during the afternoon.

The themed workshop on Sunday will be a retrospective, bringing back some of the species used at previous symposia, such as Podocarpus lawrencei, Leptospermum horizontalis, Banksia, etc. There will also be an ‘open’ workshop on Sunday afternoon.

And there will also be the associated annual exhibition of Australia species grown as bonsai.

Full details, including the symposium brochure, information sheets, registration forms, for both the symposium and the exhibition are available on the CBS website (http://www.cbs.org.au ) - follow the links from the front page.

We are later than usual in getting information out, but we hope to see many of our AusBonsai friends there!

It's less than 3 weeks until the 2018 APaB symposium and exhibition.

It should be a great weekend, and we're looking forward to seeing eveyone who is coming to Canberra for the weekend as well as all the locals at either or both events.

And with Bonsai Week on at the NBPCA the folloing week, you can make a real bonsai holiday of it!

Full details for the APaB events are available on the CBS website (http://www.cbs.org.au ) - just follow the links from the home page. Remember that registrations for the symposium need to be in by 9 March.

Hope to see you there

Only 5 days till registrations for the symposium close on Friday... so get yours in soon.

There are still workshop places available, and there will be some interesting plants available for the workshop, including a number coming up from Will Fletcher in Hobart.

The Roger Hnatiuk and Gavin Glostew workshop will be interesting, with their differing aprroaches giving participants diffrent views on how the trees could be developed.

And Doug Harris and Andrew Edge will bring diffrent approaches and experience again to their workshops.

A great weekend is shaping up, so don't miss out.

Less than 2 days till registrations for the 2018 APaB symposium close. There are still participant places for both the symposium and for all workshops. As we have to confirm catring by Friday afternoon, we are closing registrations at 1pm. You can register through the website (http://www.cbs.or.au ), or download the form, fill it in and send it to cbsshow@cbs.org.au. If you are having difficulty registering PM me.

We have an interesting array of trees for workshops, including some from Will Flethcer in Tasmania that arrived in Canberra at 7am this morning (yes - disgustingly early!). We got them because they provide an opportunity to work with species you don't often find get on the mainland. Together with plants we've sourced in and around Canberra and the Southern Tablelands there should be enough variety and quality to ensure everyone has something that will challenge them, but also result in great bonsai.

Hope to see you there.

Will Fletcher natives are grown for bonsai. He grows great trees at really good prices so this is a great chance for mainlanders to get some great pre bonsai and then get some help and advice on how to start styling.

If you haven't been to a native bonsai symposium yet you're missing out :shake: :shake:
Make the effort and register now for this year's weekend of thought provoking and practical native bonsai activities. :tu: :tu:
