I've got almost exactly the same photo

I wouldn't say I have exactly the same shot ... almost, but not quite ...
It's a killer perspective of a fantastic bonsai, definitely one of my faves.

As an aside, I found taking photos a little challenging - the light wasn't amazing so capturing the trees at their best with a phone camera was hard ... at least for me and my phone! I know there were people there with proper camera equipment - looking forward to hopefully some posts from them!
What a great weekend ... VNBC should be incredibly proud of their efforts.

I am exhausted, have returned to work for a well earned rest and to recover from information overload. On Friday before the welcome ceremony I photographed every tree, lighting was very difficult and I am yet to look at the photos but give me a few days.

You're welcome Lisa, I'm still pretty crook, but we're now only one 9hour drive from home.

Gerard the lighting was very challenging, so I suggested that an ND Grad could be useful, if anyone had one. I ended up just under-exposing those trees that were too highly lit on top. Glad to hear you're able to take some time for a rest....LOL.

I'm sure there'll be some fabulous shots available soon.

Fantastic looking Trees on display ,have been enjoying them all .Eagerly looking forward to Gerards photo presentation.
Have been studying the big Kunnzea demo tree and something just does not sit right with me. Great thick gnarly trunk ,plenty of nice straight deadwood, splayed out branches ,however I find the apex a little strange. A tight bend and a pullover with a nice rounded dome. In my opinion it does not suit the style of the Tree . Maybe different in the real .

Hey John,

I attended the Saturday session only. The two main demo trees on that day are yet to be shown on this thread. In truth, I was too interested watching and listening to the engaging discussion and byplay between Ryan and Hugh to bother with photos. What I will say is that those two Kunzea ended up quite beautiful and I learned a lot watching. I hope the photos do them justice when they are posted.

I believe, the tree you note above was a the final tree demo'd - late in the arvo on Saturday and it may have been worked on Sunday too - not sure. I reckon the final aesthetic may end up looking like this Juniper below.

Please note: I am not saying that it is great or right to copy this Juniper above - clearly, Kunzeas are not Junipers - rather I am saying that the tree in question looked quite attractive in the flesh and I could see where the design was headed. I found the design exciting albeit different in approach.

I'll be interested when the better images when they are uploaded in due course.

I've never visited a conference like this (for Bonsai) so it was all pretty cool for me. Suffice to say that I'd recommend anyone interested in this hobby to attend such a conference in future. Excellent on a number of levels.

Yes - I was with Rory. That photo that Lisa posted was the ‘main’ demo on the Saturday and it was wonderful to watch it transform.

I should point out that I liked all the finished demos that I saw on Saturday.

And that is such a cheesy yet profound philosohpy to live by. I salute you Capn Mike.
So so so many times I have seen trees wired more than an ASIO suspect, and to me it just ends up looking contrived. Obviously its in the eye of the beholder, but there is defintely something to be said for maintaining a long term view, clip-and-grow, and easing off on the wire.
