Myrtleford show 2018
It was on again last weekend. The annual Alpine Art V Shibui Bonsai grudge match at the Myrtleford Ag show. 2 traditional rivals battling it out for notoriety (also the prize cards and $2 prize purse of course)
Some shots of the competition bench:
The judge has obviously learnt a lot about bonsai since last year because she mostly picked the better trees
Seemed to be more people stopping to admire the trees and to ask about bonsai this year. We both spent quite a lot of time talking and answering questions.

Benches look great. Love seeing that waterswept Cal. Recognise quite a few of yours and Alpine’s from my hunting around in the forum. If you dont mind answering a few more questions.. what species is the one with the white flowers? And the forest slab planting?

Just realised the slab is Alpine’s (recently posted) elm clump, sorry

Re: Myrtleford show 2018
Happy to try to tell you whatever you want to know Dave.
The white flowers are on a hawthorn. I collected it about 40 years ago growing in gravel on the banks of the Goulburn river. Took ages to start to flower but now seems to be maturing and has had more flowers each year. Pity most of the petals fell off on the trip over there
The group on the slab is one of Ian's collected English elms. I don't have a closer shot of it but maybe Ian will post something. I believe this is a root that was regularly sliced by a bulldozer on a firebreak. Ian planted the resulting root upside down and the new trunks grow from what used to be the roots. He'll correct me or add more if necessary.
Well done finding that thread

The one with the white flowers looks to be a Hawthorn.

Re: Myrtleford show 2018
Well , all I can add is it was a bloody good day for bonsai enthusiasts because I had a headache from all the talking . The interest in Bonsai is definitely growing in the area which is testament to local horticultural shows like this one . Still many hesitated , I had many people ask if they could take pics , "Of the Tree's" , as if they were expecting us to say no .
With the Albury show this weekend I will have to take a few panadol along for the pain , not the public .
Congrats to Neil for a worthy challenge and commitment to the show in all the area's he participates in a competitor like no other .
I will en-devour to put the same effort , maybe a bit more , into this coming weekend at the Albury Show,
Cheers . Ian - Alpineart

Re: Myrtleford show 2018
Only half out in Canberra 2 weeks ago but almost too late this weekend. I had that they would last. A few fell during transport and set up and I took off a couple that were a bit past it. Very pleased that it lasted for the show.Wowsers.. that Azalea! - blossoms timed to perfection
Albury show this coming weekend so Ian is doing the travelling this time and back to back weekend shows. A great effort to bring bonsai to the people. Well done Ian. You should be able to take home a few more prize cards this time as I'll be in Canberra for this one.

Re: Myrtleford show 2018
Hi Shibui , there is plenty of other members to take up the challenge , they might just knock me off my perch .
I'm hoping for a good participation effort from other members considering the attendance increase at our club meetings lately .
Cheers . Alpine

Thanks for good photos of a very nice show. Congrats, Shibui and Alpine.
