The Best of 20 Years Trophy 2019
I was fortunate enough to attend this fantastic show in Belgium in February and I thought I might post a couple of trees from the exhibition each day until you get sick of it.
The colour isn't great because of the lighting, but I have included the information cards from the exhibition so you can see what type of tree and some limited info about the pot for the pottery folks out there.
I hope you enjoy.

Great photos Watto, thanks for sharing ... particularly like the Jasmine, those flowers on bare branches are very cool!
Lucky you for getting to see it in person.

Thanks Watto!
Do you know why the name Noelanders has been removed from the event? Wasn't it always known by Marc's name as the person who started the whole thing?

There has been a split between Marc and the Belgium Bonsai Society and Marc has moved on.

Super, Watto! Love the originality of certain trees. I would never have dared to put a Gingko like the one shown here into a show. But then: why not? The jasmine is nice and wild. Hmmm... I wonder if Marc would have accepted these two trees? Well, that's now beside the point.
Thanks for posting!

Would love to know your further thoughts why you would have not put the jasmine and in particular the ginkgo into a show ?? Both are excleent example of the species and very highly developed. So interested to hear your reasoning
Cheers
Hugh

Re: The Best of 20 Years Trophy 2019
Hello Hugh,
I'd be darn proud if I had succeeded in growing that Gingko... from a horticulturist point of view. But why should I admire it from an esthetic and/or bonsai grower's standpoint? The narrow, tall, wild broom stuck on a short fat divided (?) trunk seems to me to have very little artistic appeal. OK, that is personal. Secondly, from the Gingkos I've seen here in Canberra and what is shown on the net, this bonsai is not a really good representation of the species. Here I quote: "A deciduous tree that is narrow and pyramidal at first, but later spreads out as it grows." This bonsai has the pyramidal branch structure of the young tree and the trunk of a big mature one, though it is too short.
The Winter Jasmine is not at all typical of a shrub grown without styling. Can be checked on the Internet, I won't take up more space here. Sorry, Hugh, but the styling of the bonsai shown here totally lacks the elegance of the species. Also, the bulge at the base of the trunk on the right is unsightly.
A pity Marc Noelanders moved on, from the point of view of this famous event. I fear it will never be the same again.

Re: The Best of 20 Years Trophy 2019
Keep the pics coming Watto!
I can see why Hugh would say that, as the artistic side is definitely strongly represented in them.
But from a more tree-like perspective I agree with LLK, it doesn't do it for me either.
But in my opinion I find a lot of exhibition trees to be contrived, like the other trees on this thread. Treeman put it best once, with his resentment of rough and weathered natural bases, displaying contrived manicured tops....
Everyone sees things differently though.
I love the pot that the Ginkgo is in.
