That's remarkable as an elm, they must have carved the trunk as well? I really do like that "New Style" tree, whatever it is!
Is it some sort of phoenix graft, perhaps?

Hi Watto ,thanks for the show . The elm is created by leaving the wire on untill it really digs in .

I opt for Lingnan - clip and grow. Plus some extraordinary carving. The detail below was obtained via Paint. The elm is created by leaving the wire on untill it really digs in .

He calls it Burtonesque...
Sadly he's shown his last trees, and sold off his entire collection after the trophy...

That’s quite funny Mel - I am not sure whether you are referencing the work of the producer Tim Burton but it is a bit freaky to note that I was I was tossing up a similar reference - it is a rather macabre tree! [FLUSHED FACE]melbrackstone wrote:He calls it Burtonesque...

It's his words, Mark. He is clearly referencing Tim Burton when he uses that word to describe some of his trees.
One of his latest posts on farcebook
"I will make my last appearance in the world of bonsai at the Noelanders from 8 to 10 February in Belgium. I sell the entire collection that will be visible in my truck. Do not hesitate to contact me during the show.
Raw sabinas/pines in progress and few burton style in progress... around 30 trees."

The Best of 20 Years Trophy 2019
What I love is that he clearly has a style ... I imagine it’s quite divisive -
perhaps a ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ style but it’s his style and I reckon that’s very cool.
Imagine - oh, that crepe myrtle clearly has a Brackstone influence or that Shohin pine is clearly a Kez ... the list goes on. Oh ... and MJL just destroyed another bunch of trees in his groupings. Ha - gotta laugh.
A style that is sadly now consigned to history as it seems he is selling up. Alas, the world turns.
Bonsai teaches me patience.

Re: The Best of 20 Years Trophy 2019
He used to show a lot of his stuff on IBC ( Internet Bonsai Club ) under the name of Law . Some really interesting design . I think he leaves the wire in most of the time and the tree grows around it .

The great interest in this tree shows how much we appreciate originality in bonsai!
The art is how to achieve it without being plain crazy.

Re: The Best of 20 Years Trophy 2019
Agree totally, and it clearly is divisive, which has apparently been the catalyst for his selling all his trees. Such a shame. What I love is that he clearly has a style ... I imagine it’s quite divisive
Thanks Sno, I'll see if I can find some of his work there. He used to show a lot of his stuff on IBC ( Internet Bonsai Club ) under the name of Law . Some really interesting design . I think he leaves the wire in most of the time and the tree grows around it
Certainly true in my case. The great interest in this tree shows how much we appreciate originality in bonsai!
Thanks again Watto for sharing these trees with us. I'm glad to have found Laurent's work!
