Ryan Neil's Convention Critique session on Natives Videos

Post by DavidN »

Hi All
I was lucky enough to be at the recent AABC Convention and hear Ryan's critique session on some of our Australian Native bonsai.
I took video and have posted on Youtube. If you haven't already seen these, then I think they are great critiques on some of our Australian Natives as bonsai.

Thanks David.
I have a comment

Marcela's melaleuca. It has been my favourite stypheliodes for a long time. Truly magnificent lines. But Ryan's comment about a change of pot reducing the visual value of the tree I must disagree with. To me the present pot does not visually support the volume of this tree, lacks stability and contrary to Ryan's suggestion that that pot's value rests with the fact that it reflects a natural landscape, I feel that the two elements are actually competing with each other due to their similarity. I feel a rectangle of the right texture, depth, and colour would contrast with and visually enhance the qualities of this tree. A completely flat natural stone much larger (wider) than this pot would also be effective IMO.
But after all that, one of my favourite bonsai of all time, let alone native bonsai.
Why do potters think that stones need to hold soil and be shaped like boats? They don't.

Thanks, David, but I can't get the videos either. Got a lot of polo images for the first and after that only got "This video is not available". Looking forward to good access!
