Remembering Joe Micalef

Post by hard1all »

A number of posts on ausbonsai refer to Joe Micalef who was a well-known Australian Bonsai artist in 1960s/70s. I understand he was based in Canberra?

I never knew him but I think he was especially known for the big bends he achieved in, mainly, Cedars. I do know that more than one of his trees has survived to this very day and more than one have been featured in the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection in Canberra. I think he'd be proud of that.

So, when I came across these photos in Lee Wilson's archives I thought I'd share them and record another entry on Joe Micalef for posterity.

I met the man when a group of bonsai people and myself drove from Melbourne to the Canberra bonsai seminar about 25 years ago.

He had a most impressive collection.
