Shock-waves are spreading through the bonsai and art communities after the wife and 2 sons of the late bonsai artist, sculptor and Bonsai Exotique gallery owner Thor Beowulf were recently charged with murder.
Melissa Beowulf, 60, Thorsten Beowulf, 31, and Bjorn Beowulf, 29, have been locked up in the Alexander Maconochie Centre, Canberra since late August 2017 charged with murdering Thor's elderly Mother, Katherine Panin, 81, just 2 months after his passing.
Before he succumbed to stage 4 pancreatic cancer on 7th August 2015, Thor was a PhD candidate at the Australian National University, researching the art and aesthetics of bonsai and how it mediates the highly contested space between nature and art/culture. Thor also ran his bonsai nursery and gallery, Bonsai Exotique, in Woollahra, NSW for many years. Thor maintained the Brett Whiteley bonsai on behalf of the Whiteley Foundation and was a consultant to the previous Governor-General’s bonsai collection.
All three accused have entered not guilty pleas.
