Rock of all rocks

Post by alpineart »

This is a commissioned works destined for Melbourne , well i hope to get it down there anyway . Made from AAC blocks and panels weighing in at 140kg it needed trimming down .

P1080414.JPG
P1080417.JPG
Plenty of pics flying back and forth to get the right style required .
P1080535.JPG
P1080538.JPG
P1080542.JPG
It hard to build something like this with a sketch from a distant place . Finally deciding on this configuration
P1080552.JPG
P1080554.JPG
P1080550.JPG
it was glued and semi carved , weighing around 85kgs , 600mm wide , 550mm deep and 1.6m high . Should be a nice center piece when finished . The pot it will reside in is 1.6 m wide 900mm deep and 300mm high . It will be carved fully and rendered with numerous coats of acrylic render then finished off with a water proofing cement render colour coat .

I'm guessing that you're not going to post (Australia Post that is) this one!

Please keep posting, however, I'm certainly interested to see the process, the finished product and later the item installed - what a project!

Hi Jan , Aussie post cant handle this item so it will be personally delivered plus i would like to see the pot in person .

Hi Meagi , I'll toot as i go wizzing by your place , might need a truck .

Hi Jason , the 140kgs of hebel bricks bent the axle so it will need some attention , I hope to load it on a custom pallet not wheels , not my problem at the other end .

Just put it on the scales looking for a figure of 75kg , bugger me it weighs 105kgs with more carving done today . A check of the bricks and they vary from 5 -7kg , i guess i used all the 7 kilo buggers .A worthy note for the next project is to weigh each brick .

The owner required a lighter structure so it was up
P1080593.JPG
P1080596.JPG
, down
P1080597.JPG
and round about
P1080598.JPG
Still sitting at 88 kgs it need a drastic cut so i ripped 100mm off the base, yes back up again for another chop
P1080602.JPG
Now we're cooking with gas at 77 kgs . Time for the waterproofing , 4 coats weer sprayed on then the base render
P1080606.JPG
A happy camper , now for the base colour
P1080607.JPG
With the sun setting in paradise the final highlight coats will go on tomorrow , then another 2 waterproofing coats and its done and dusted .

Cheers .Alpineart

Hi Newbie.mia , i have always like carving be it rock or wood , takes time to get them right but the result is like a quality bonsai to me . Some work out some don't . Give it a shot ,i have quite a few carved pieces . I would like to see a topic if you happen to make something . .

Cheers Alpine.

Hi Fiveoffive , mate that's for the fish to swim in and out of , give them a bit of shelter and the pump will be hidden .It will solar powered and run the waterfall. No fertilizer need as the fish waste will do all the work . The landscape is the rock , the pot is the pond .Ihope to see it completedmaybe i can get a pic or two here or get them uploaded by the owner .

Hi Jason , mate , plan your design , use waterproof bonding agents and seal it up water tight .

Another early start as the colour goes on
P1080611.JPG
, then blended and waterproofed again
P1080613.JPG
. I used another 4 litres of waterproofing sprayed on and dried between each coat . This is a quick landscape as the owner requested
P1080616.JPG
Now all i have to do is make a pallet to load it into the ute and deliver . Better get it out of the weather as rain is forecast for the next few days . I will definitly hide it from the Bride , she liked the grey base coat so she may just decide we need one laying around the yard somewhere . .

Cheers Alpine
