Re: New look grow beds and benches
Hi Biocs , mate I'm certainly stoked with how it has turned out .
Hi MoGanic ,I Umm'd and Ahh'd for many years and with the loss of interest in Bonsai i needed a new look area to inspire the thoughts again . I had a vision and its coming together be it slowly but thats the pace needed to complete a mamoth task like this one .
Cheers . Alpine

This is one of the front terraces finished off
Cheers Alpineart
adding another 20 square meters of grow beds for the crab apples or trident . Tomorrow this will be turned over with the rotary hoe and planted out , looks like a day off from batching concrete .Cheers Alpineart

Re: New look grow beds and benches
What a wonderful set of structures from what has obviously been a hell of a lot of intensive effort.
Congratulations, you should be proud. The result speaks for itself. Striking, substantial, and extremely impressive, I hope it brings you a lot of joy and satisfaction.

Re: New look grow beds and benches
Hi Josh , I figure I'm well past the halfway point to the first major works the walls are getting smaller as i progress , eventually it will get finished . It's better to be doing this in Winter rather than Summer thats for sure . The body is getting a good work out , just hope it holds out .
Hi GMA , the effort has transformed the yard into a very usable area that will definately give many years of satisfaction . I have had plenty of traffic through here lately and most agree I'm a friggin Nutter for taking it on , but they are impressed with the transformation . Mind you the yard like everything here has been rather neglected for too long .
Cheers Guys .Alpine

, I began to plant out the last of the Crab Apples and finished then off this morning . These will be wired again for another seasons growth . The Chinese Elm root cuttings and layers are tucked in the Black , Red and Mt Fuji Cherries are also finished .Now that the conmix has thawed i had better get out there and lay some more rocks .Cheers Alpineart

Re: New look grow beds and benches
Hi Neli , thanks for the positive reply , hard work never hurt anyone . No pain no gain , just dont tell me that , its been very painful but enjoyable at the same time . Still got 2 arms 2 feet and a heart beat , they just drag me along a bit slower .
I should have the rear terrace linked up and finished tomorrow just shy of the stairs , then its time to dig the Tridents and Hornbeams like there's no tomorrow and hopefully get them planted back in the ground and all the re-potting done before Spring hits .
Cheers . Alpine

This is why I love this website, getting the inspiration to try out some new things from seeing peoples creations. I love stone, it's such a powerful material with so many different uses.

Tremendous work. Just as a matter of interest, how many trees are you field growing at the moment? How many bonsai do you have in pots? Clearly this takes up a lot of time. Time well spent.

Re: New look grow beds and benches
Hi GMA , stone/ rock is a beautiful medium with its own character. I considered split blocks and retaining blocks but the character just didn't suit the site , would have been easier and quicker but i love a challenge .
Hi Gerald , mate at a guess there would be around 1000 grow bed plants , 200 planter bag/pot plant trainers , 300 bonsai potted trainers or works in progress . A couple of those you could call Bonsai .
I dare say I'm about 1/4 of the way through re-potting and digging grow bed material . This rock work has taken up way too much time but has been worth every moment as the result will mean more managebility of the growing stock .
Cheers Guys . Alpine

Re: New look grow beds and benches
Outstanding!
I've built stairs and walls in granite and know only too well that when push comes to shove, stone doesn't give but skin does. Don't think about how many tons you've lifted, just stand back occasionally and enjoy what you've achieved.
As I said, outstanding - a mighty effort and a very aesthetically pleasing result (not to mention the grow beds gained and display areas gained). Beautifully done.
