Huon pine stand

Post by melbrackstone »

I've just returned from Tasmania, and on my last day I stopped in the tourist trap Richmond, since there was still nearly an hour before needing to check in. I just couldn't resist this tiny little $6 piece of Huon pine as a base for a shohin...(if I ever manage to produce one worth displaying!)

What struck me was the number of growth rings on such a small (80mm) piece of timber! I knew the Huon grew slowly, but this really brought it home to me.

Huon is such a beautiful timber. I'm a cabinet maker by trade and have worked a lot with this in the past. It has such a wonderful aroma as well.

Nice find.

Hi Mel
Great purchase, it's always nice to bring back a useful souvenir from a holiday.
I went a little crazy buying cheese boards from the Salamanca markets when I visited Tassie at Christmas.

thanks @quodlibet_ens, hubby loves woodworking, and we also stopped at a timber sales place in Devonport...he was very taken with a large slab of Huon we found under a stack of other odds and ends, turns out the owner had thought he'd hidden it...lol! Hubby balked at $800 though, so we walked out of there empty handed...

@watto I'm keen to find the right piece to display on it... wondering whether there's a protocol about colours of bases and colours of pots... I guess I'll need to do some research.

Cheers @fae, I usually only bring home photos, but couldn't resist this piece!

I counted more than 70 growth rings in that small diameter piece. :crikey: Now that would be a verrrry loooonnng term kind of tree to bonsai!!

@Raging Bull, it's pretty amazing, isn't it? Certainly growing one as bonsai would be more of an exercise in patience than usual!
