Training pots

Post by quodlibet_ens »

I've seen a number of photos on here where folks have planted their trees in colander type plastic pots. I happened to spot these (pictured below) at work today and wondered if these would be suitable. I imagine I would need to drill some holes in the bottom for better drainage, but these are shallow compared to your standard black plastic pots and reasonably inexpensive.

Would these be suitable enough?ImageImage

I'm trying these buried in the ground. First attempt at using this method so will be interesting to see how it goes.

I'll need to double check this but now thinking about it I doubt it.

I have small selected areas where I might be able to do this. Matlea, what species are you currently using this method with? If I could use this method I was thinking of trialling it with my natives first.

Hi quodlibet_ens,
These will work fine, but you definitely need to drill holes in the bottom. I buy ones like this that already have holes molded in the bottom. They work just the same as colanders.

If you don't mind me asking Ray, where do you purchase yours from? A local $2 shop or online perhaps?

Nathan.

Hi Nathan,
I usually purchase my colanders and other "colander" type pots from the $2 shops in Eastwood. I keep my eye open if I'm in another suburb and see $2 shops. I've picked up some good pots this way. If you have a Delicatessen in your area don't forget to ask if they get Ricotta cheese in colanders. These colanders are quite good.
