Training plastic pots

Post by Rob101 »

Hi all

I was given a number of low height plastic pots in different sizes a while back. They are strong and lasted for some time now. Does anybody know where i can buy them - pics below

If you search for "squat orchid pot" you'll find what you're looking for.
Haven't bought any so can't recommend any sellers.

I prefer the plastic pots Sue. Terracotta absorbs water so it will suck moisture out of your potting mix. With my extremely open mix I can't afford to lose any extra moisture. If you use a finer, more moisture holding mix or can manage the watering terracotta might be the go. Terracotta training pots seem to be very popular in Japanese bonsai nurseries.

Further to what shibui was saying, terracotta pots are very absorbent and will draw moisture away from the potting mix to the outside of the pot, that’s why they grow mould etc on the outside. To use them you have to seal the inside surface of the pot with bondcrete which is a PVA water based sealer, similar to aqudhere. IMO plastic pots are far better for growing stock. Tim

Thanks Shibui, I guessed someone would know. (I did think that black pots absorb too much heat in summer??).
Timritchie thanks to you too- I will seal the ones I have- plenty of PVA here although a lot of PVA is not waterproof long term so maybe Marine varnish would be better??? I do like the shape of the terracotta....and watering is not a problem for me as I am always in the garden since I retired...and I have bore, tank and town water- an abundance! Love it!

this is a common idea but in reality we don't seem to see it in practice. I don't understand the why or how just the results.
Note that Timritchie actually specified Bondcrete for sealing. It is specifically formulated for this sort of outside work. I don't think ordinary household PVA will do the same thing. There are also a number of pond sealers that should work too if you do want to try to seal them.
