Hi B888, in my opinion they would have to be supported every metre to a metre & half as well as the ends. The 22 mm thickness would otherwise sag quickly with a number of pots on it. Have you thought about using galv. wire mesh fencing panels?

I think my shelves are about 3000 X 200 X 45 from memory. No movement at that thickness.

Thanks for the help thus far,

i went out to a timber yard today and managed to get them to cut to size TP H3 190mm x45mm x2.15 Meters for a better price then anything at bunnings.

I been testing out a couple of stains / sealants and i have to say i'm not much of a fan.It seems to just look "fake"
Has anyone had any success or is everyone just going untreated and just changing them out as they degrade?

Is it worth just applying clear only to maintain the pine look but offer better water protection?

When you say "TP" I presume it's treated pine. If you don't mind the raw look, just leave it unfinished, it'll weather to a grey colour. Another option is to coat it in decking oil, but that would have to be renewed about every 6 months. If you clear finish it, that won't last very long either unless you re-varnish it about once a year. I have some timber fittings on my boat with 6 coats of marine varnish on them and even that has to be renewed at least every 2 years.

No need for treatment. Mine are the same size but about 3m long and are still fine after a couple of years. As you can see from my picture above in earlier comments, the top shelf is new and the other two are faded. They are all grey now.

Whatever you put on it will change as the weather and water affect the timber. Personally, I agree with Raging Bull: leave them natural. You probably won't even see the stark initial colour when they're covered in pots and the colour does fade quite quickly to grey.

I reckon raw or .... black. Raw seems to match the wall colour quite well now but will fade to grey. Black will match your supporting bricks and could look quite good as a base ‘frame’ against the light brick wall? Whatever floats your boat ... I am sure it’ll look fine when pots abound.
