MY FIRST POT!!!

Well this is the first of 4 pots I have made at pottery class, I picked it up yest. I would have preferred it to be a darker brown it's so hard to tell with colour samples. I have seen this shape on previous posts sp I copied, but now I'm thinking it looks a bit like a "claw foot bath" Can I have some honest opinions, because if you think the same I wont do any more of this shape. The other 3 are proper pots and tray for a forrest. I think I'm tough enough for critique

Congratulations! Well done on your first attempt!
I think the feet on your next one could be placed further apart and if you make them a little longer, you won't have to worry about the centre of your pot slumping.

Thanks for the nice comments Penny and Pat, I enjoy it so much, it's a real sense of achievement and they can only get better with practice. Looking forward seeing how the others turn out. Penny, on one of the others (a tray for a forrest )the instructor told me to put another leg in the middle to prevent sagging...but I've taken notice of what you say and will follow your advise.

Yep looks a lot like a bath to me too

You could fill it with water and put some lillies in it

Loretta, when you make a long (wide) piece, place a strip (or 2) of clay under the middle and fire it with the pot - both bisque and gloss. That way, it won't sag during the firing and you can remove it after and you won't have an extra foot which spoils the visual line of your pot.

I think you did an outstanding job on that pot, Loretta.

Penny's advise on how to improve on this first attempt is good. I practice this type of approach myself.

Your glaze application looks good. How did you apply your glaze?

Thank you for that information, I had no idea something could be removed after firing. This has not been pointed out to me at class at all, it seems you're just left to your own devices and get advise when you ask for it. I had no idea this first one would sag while firing and didn't know you could remove a support afterwards either. So once again I'm learning more on the site than I am in a class

Loretta, don't glaze the underside of the pot where you will put the strips or you won't be able to remove them.

Now that's sounds like a good idea Anja....I could buy a slab of clay, borrow a basic starters book from her and experiment at home. Four hours a week (when I can get there) really isn't enough. Each time I go I feel as though I'll never get out of the "starter mode" and there's absolutely no "one on one" tuition. She is too busy making things for herself to sell. I'll see if I can buy some from her and give it a go at home.

Thanks Sean for your comments. The next one I thought I would try is to just hand mould on with all sorts of concaves and crevices hopefully in the shape of a natural rock. I hope it works out
