This little Dendrobium was looking too good not to share. The rock that it is planted on is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Hi Steven,

Terrific little gem. Could I suggest a little wire on………

Great effect, with very likely very little soil.

Regards, AnneK.

Rod, Lots of Dendrobium species from many countries. Some are big buggers with large flowers but others are quite small. Check specialist orchid nurseries for more detailed info on species and hybrids that would suit your area that are small.

Very nice,

Does anyone have any tips for growing orchids. I'm a bit confused on how to treat them. Outdoor / indoor ?

How often when to water?

And what mix works pine bark ?

Depends on the orchid. With around 25,000 species it is a bit hard to generalise.

Most will survive heavy shade but may not flower well. Many like a little morning sun. Some like lots of sun through winter and shade through summer.

As for watering, some need water twice a day in summer and none in winter and many combinations in between.

And for potting mix, there are terrestrial orchids needing soil like mix, semi terrestrials that like it a bit more open and then others like big chunks of bark.

Most like a humid environment, but with all good airflow is essential.

Mine are under some trees with fairly heavy shade, with high humidity and good air movement. They get watered about twice a week at the moment.

So what orchids where you thinking of?
