Moss Jackpot!

Post by quodlibet_ens »

I found this growing in the old gutters I had replaced today. Aside from the leaf debris, I think it all looks pretty good.

I was thinking of using it to make a small moss garden as pictured below

Anyone have any tips to keeping this alive until I get a chance to use it? .ImageImageImage

Keep in the shade and water to keep damp. Maybe even put the moss trays in another tray that will hold water, if you have one, so there is constant moisture.

I was thinking of putting some soil in the bottom of those trays to hold the moisture, should that do the trick?

For temp storAge i line the tray with a whole local newspaper. This olds the water well and keeps the moss clean.

Great idea! Do you change the newspaper over every week?

That's some great moss. Hard to find anything good where I am, most of it's dried out and dead :(

I never realised how much of this stuff was around the place until I started this hobby.

All around my water tanks at home, in the kerb channel... on all over my rock retaining wall and concrete garden edging... seems to love Concrete!

Good score.
It’s all about the new experience!

I have small pockets here and there, but it's never been this good. This is definitely the most I've found.

There are hundreds of different mosses. Some are a bit too large and coarse to look good on our bonsai so have a good look around for the compact, low growing sorts if you want to dress your pots. Some of the compact types are hardier than others so when you find one that persists that will be the best one to use.

Remember too that some mosses hate shade and love sun and some hate sun and love shade. The place where you find them will give you the clue. You can't mix the two. One will die.

I too have fair bit that I collect and throw it in old logs or in the damp side of my property. It's everywhere if you look enough!
