Hey guys,

I really want to purchase a few of these beautiful Japanese Maples. They are called Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum or Full Moon Maple. I live in Victoria and have found it very difficult to find a nursery who stick them. There is a place in Tasmania who have them but the shipping costs get expensive.

Can anyone suggest a more local supplier,

Trouble is that they are grafted onto palmatums which make for a really ugly union. I guess you could layer it off but I don't know how easy it would be.

I got mine from online. Very reasonable price. I think they r in melb as well.

I've found that the only people in the world that seem to care much about graft unions are bonsai people. You either have to find a bonsai supplier growing them on their own roots or with really good grafts, or do it yourself. Mass grafting is just the quickest way for commercial nurseries to get sellable trees. I have a few JMs with terrible grafts that I will soon be air layering the top off of.

One option with these might be to layer it just a few mm below the graft. That way you are rooting from the palmatum stock (which is easier) but the graft will no longer be visible.
I tried layering an Acer sieboldianum 'Sode no uchi' a few times without success. Its a beautiful tree with small leaves and iwould love to find a way to increase it without grafting. So if anyone has an idea..................................

They have more muture stock too but be prepared to pay top $ for quality
