Thanks AndyC & GMA for your interest in those rocks. Rocks have stories to tell and this, to me, is why they are so naturally associated with presenting minature trees and landscapes. I never cease wondering how different rocks were created and then eroded down over periods of time we can't really comprehend. To say they add perspective is an understatement.
The first shot is a cross section of a small tree shaped like a round of firewood ready to be split but then has been tumbled in a river to end up a spherical piece of petrified wood. The second stone is a piece of thunderegg containg red agate and quartz from Agate Creek west of Townsville I cut then partly ground to appear waterworn.

Nice colours on the first one.

The second one closely resembles a dissected lung from a smoker patient. I'm not being funny. I remember walking through the preserved organs at the UNSW Medical building, and they look just like this.

Hi Fossil Finder, what do you do to your rocks/suiseki to give them that sheen? I found some brightly coloured rocks when they were wet near Port Macquarie, however when they dried out they became dull. I painted one with low sheen varnish and came up a treat.... displaying a lot of the colours lost by drying out.

That first rock looks like an impressionist oil painting. I can see trees in it.

I coat the rocks with Melrose cold-pressed refined coconut oil that we bought from a chemist. It can be used in cooking, is clear and odorless. Depending on where you buy it it may be solid but quickly melts on hot days. Porous rocks will absorb it quickly but a little on a hard stone leaves a nice patina that is not greasy.

I see what you mean Rory. The agate does have a flesh like colouring. I'm hoping to save that patient by sandblasting much of that dirty staining off at some stage which should make it a bit cleaner looking. Here's some of my collection I have found over the years after high pressure wash recently. The large stone in foreground is a large piece of conglomerate containing petrified wood, jasper and quartz. The large stone in background is a thunderegg chunk yet to be closely photograped.

Thanks for your comment boom64. Planning on a designated area in my nursery so I can peruse them when looking for inspiration. Probably need as much room as the plants!

Hi I am just getting to appreciate suiseki. The best thing is with a couple of collected rocks that they haven't died yet?

I find rocks to be really hard.

Love these, fossil finder! I'm always bringing rocks home in my luggage... hubby hates having to carry my bag on the way home from a trip.

I didn't think of coconut oil, so now I'm off to polish a few of mine!
