Hi All
Just wanted to pick the brains of those in the know as to whether this rock is a piece of fossil wood or not . The lines on the side match the curved lines on the top, I know the photos aren't the best

i thought i t looks like sandstone too, but you really have to feel it to be sure.
I think petrified wood is a smooth texture rather than gritty like sand

That's definitely sedimentary layering not tree ring marks and yes fossilised wood is a much harder consistency than that appears to be. A sandstone would be my

my money is on sandstone too, I lived on the central coast nsw where you would see that stuff everywhere, but now I live in scone nsw where every stone you kick your foot on is petrified wood, and yes texture and density is very different, sand stone should feel some what like a piece of sand paper, where as a piece of petrified wood that flat would feel smoother by comparison.

Hi all , it does have a sandy feel about it so I guess it's sandstone then , wish I could make a trip to scone reidy . I've wanted a piece for my suiseki collection for ages now but not willing to pay what they want on the net. So I'll just have to wait till I find a piece for myself. Thanks for the input guys

I was lucky to come across this nice mountain shaped piece of terrified wood in West Qld. It has wood grain but it is also very hard, smooth and shiny so ideal as suiseki.

if you ever come through scone Peterb look me up I literally have tons of the stuff, from small pebble size stones to tree stump size up to 700mm in diameter

Hi all, newish to the site, I have been watching for a while from the sidelines. I am in agreement with everyone, it is not very scared wood, not even sacred wood. Just a lump of sandstone.

My story: I am busily adding to my stone and rock collection, already rather a collection. Hopefully early next year I will have collected enough wood working equipment (and some skill to go with it) and have made my first diaza and shall put a stone or 2 up on here for your opinions. I have collected some "traditional" viewing stones or very close to it, and then I have some rather outlandish stuff that hopefully everyone sees what I see in it???

welcome to the forum, don't know how far you are from Sydney, but if you weren't to far you could join the australian suiseki society and learn about daiza carving. You could also just join for the newsletter which is very informative which is my situation, Adelaide's a little far to go for a monthly meeting. If you did want to join contact Brenda Parker on 0412384834. Anyway the sacrilegious piece of lowly sandstone still has a prominent position in my collection because a special little person gave it to me after carefully washing it because I had said it was possibly fossil wood
