I am a competition virgin, but have just posted an entry and will have a look tomorrow for some other plants which might suit. Thanks Rory for starting this, and what amazing pots are on offer!

I just noticed this post. I'd love Neil or others to chime in and comment on Boronia as bonsai. They make lovely garden plants (a personal favourite), but I have not seen many people trialling them.
My suggestion would be if you like it, to repot it now and work the roots now. That way you have until 31st Jan 2019 to see if it survives.
This is what makes these competitions fun, to see so many varieties being experimented with.

Hi - can I please have a ruling on something like this. Neither is more than 3mm but about 12mm from outside to outside so not sure how that works for the 1cm rule. Let me know

Hi Pat,

If that was the entry photo it wouldn't be allowed as it exceeds 1cm.
I get where you are coming from, but if the point it enters the soil is greater than 1cm then its too big, sorry. It wouldn't be fair to others who have kept within the 1cm

I Love this idea! A lot of my bonsai began as young starters or cuttings I took. I will have to get out there and look.

Just to clarify a few things. If we submit an entry now with a tree less than 1cm diameter, is it still eligible if by the 31st of January it is over 1cm? And when can we start work on them? Do we need to wait until the 1st of Feb, or can we start as soon as we submit?

Hi dansai,

As long as the initial entry photo clearly shows the base of each tree is up to only 1cm across then it can easily grow larger than that in the next few months.

So If you submit an entry now for example, you don’t have to submit the next photo update until 30th April 2019 which will clearly show a big gain in the trunk

As soon as you’ve taken the initial photo showing the 1cm, you can start work ASAP.
So you can take the photo now, then group them all or repot or anything you like, so the sooner the better for you all.
Also, as an added bonus to maximise your fun, if your entry dies after a root rework or repot for the first time, you can submit a new entry before 31st Janauary 2019, as long as you clearly say in your posts which ones have been withdrawn or died.

So for example, Watto has shown each of his eucalyptus trees are clearly up to 1cm at the base, so he can repot them, work the roots, group them up all now, style them, trim them if he wishes right now. Then if some die, he can add more trees if he wants before 31st Janauary 2019 cutoff. This way it encourages you to do the first root work now and make sure the stock is alive for the 3 year competition. Now is usually the best time to do a repot and separate the roots now to ensure you’ve got good stock going forward. But please clearly say in your threads which ones you are going with once the 31st January 2019 rolls around.

Please update your threads as much as you like and comment freely telling showing others what you’ve done and why.
The greatest thing about Stevens site here is how much we all learn from all the friendly members here and having recorded progression threads to learn from.
