I will go one step further then, I think it is a Acer Palmatum arakawa. I am probably wrong but the older bark looks as though it is developing "warts" which is usually how rough bark maples begin to roughen up.

Sorry for the delay! Things have been somewhat busy here at the AusBonsai office. :shock:

This was a tricky one due to the twigs that look like thorns... yes twigs, not thorns.

What threw me was the flower/fruiting spurs with the sharp spine on the end, looked like thorns. :palm:
