I will go one step further then, I think it is a Acer Palmatum arakawa. I am probably wrong but the older bark looks as though it is developing "warts" which is usually how rough bark maples begin to roughen up.

To help it along a bit, I think a lot of people have not noticed the "Thorns"

Sorry for the delay! Things have been somewhat busy here at the AusBonsai office.

This was a tricky one due to the twigs that look like thorns... yes twigs, not thorns.

What threw me was the flower/fruiting spurs with the sharp spine on the end, looked like thorns.
