-------since my formal upright suggestion didn't get much push--how bout a something from nothing comp.-------everyone purchase a 'pencil pine' ,(most nurseries would have then in the bargain bin)-----any size, and see what can be done--they are relatively pliable and could lend itself to several styles and interpretations

I've been a member for almost a year now and am really looking forward to a basic beginner comp to sink my teeth into
I want to challenge myself and see if i have learnt anything over this past year

I will participate in everything and anything u guys decide

Love the idea of a ROR contest, but I am really waiting for the Shohin contest to be revived (for both new entries, and surviving ones) as I have a couple of trees on my benches which I am eagerly wanting to hack into but I am waiting for the competions revival.

The other one that I think is a great suggestion as it includes newbies and the more experienced and everyone inbetween is the nursery stock competition. I dont think it should be limited to stock purchased only during the competition dates as I'm sure there is more than a few of you out there with untouched stock trees on your bench. I would suggest similar rules apply to the nursery stock comp as those at the start of the shohin comp (which I think was only allowed to have ben trunk chopped???) Obviously a photo with the tree and the comp start date edition of the local newspaper would be advisable.


As for the trip to Japan prize........as much as I would love that as a prize, somehow I don't think that will ever happen unless this site becomes a paid site that requires subscription.

Some great ideas for comps!

I just need to finalise the shohin t's & c's then it will be launching. Need to come up with some prizes too. If anyone has any ideas or donations, please let me know.

Hi guys
Im brand new to Bonsai but have the bug already. What ever it may be, Im in. A perfect opportunity to really try and learn some new stuff.
Maybe you could have two classes, experienced and novice, to make it fair on those that dont have the years behind us that others do. Just a thought.

I read an interesting debate for an against 'instant bonsai' yesterday and thought it would be a good competition to have. maybe set a $xx limit for the plant/pot, and give us 4-6 weeks to see what we can do with it. now would be a good time to start too with the weather warming up

I had all of my trees disqualified from Shohin comps because I didn’t come on to Ausbonsai for quite a long period of time, so I would love an opportunity for another competition 
I only had a quick skim over that post, but I think a 6week “instant bonsai” comp could be fun! Fairly cheap material, no size limits (obviously it won’t be too big with cheap material ) and just a bit of fun.

Lots of good ideas for competitions in this thread but everyone seems to be waiting for 'THEM' to organise it. I don't think there is anything preventing individuals or groups from holding a competition. All you need is some rules, some prizes (even just flimsy, badly printed certificates and the notoriety of being a winner) and a judge(s) and we are away.

Don't sit around grumbling cause someone else should organise it... Put something in and get it happening.
