AusBonsai Winter Wiki Writers Competition

We are pleased to announce a competition that you can enter from the warmth of your home over the next few months while our trees aren't growing so much. The Winter Wiki Writers competition is intended to generate additional content in the WIKI that KCPoole has already put a lot of effort into creating. Thanks Ken!!

We have the following lovely Shohin and Mame/Kusamono pots to give away as prizes which have been generously donated by Penny Davis of Mudlark Pottery. Thanks Penny! :worship:

The competition will open on 1st July 2014 and the closing date will be 31st October 2014. The competition is open to anyone, including our overseas members.

Categories are as follows:

CATEGORY 1 - Best and most comprehensive article.
Create a new article not already covered in the wiki about anything relating to bonsai or the associated arts.

CATEGORY 2 - Most prolific and accurate contributions or edits.
The member who creates the most relevant edits, additions, links or pictures to existing articles, or pages that add value to the Wiki.

HOW TO ENTER
To enter the competition, simply post a reply in this thread stating the category you wish to enter and the Title of the page you wish to create or edit. The first member to reserve a topic will be the only member able to write about that subject.

REQUIREMENTS
• It is encouraged to use threads from AusBonsai to create Wiki articles. When doing so ensure you include a link to the original thread and give credit to the original contributors.
• Articles must be accurate and contain relevant information. [Relevancy is judged by the Moderation team of AusBonsai]
• Images posted must either be your own, you must have permission in writing to post them or they must have already been posted on AusBonsai. Images should be no bigger than 1024 x 768 pixels.
• When quoting times of the year to perform work, use seasons not months so the timing is more relevant to different time zones.

PRIZES
• Each category winner will receive a Mudlark Pottery Shohin Pot and a Mame/Kusamono pot.
• Second place in each category will receive 2 Mudlark Pottery Mame/Kusamono pots.

REVIEW AND JUDGING
• Submissions will be reviewed by the Moderators of AusBonsai for compliance with the requirements.
• Judging for Category 1 will be done by the members of AusBonsai. Judging will be opened soon after the competition closes and will take place over the following week by way of survey.
• Judging for Category 2 will be done via the AusBonsai Moderation team by counting the relevant edits associated to individual members.

TIME-FRAME
• Entries can be made at any time between 1st July 2014 and 31st October 2014.
• Articles or editing must be completed and submitted prior to midnight 31st October 2014.
• Judging will take in early November and will remain open for 1 week.

THE FINE PRINT
• Contest is void where prohibited by law.
• All work must be completed by the submitting artist.

Nice work :) Such a great idea for a comp, really look forward to seeing what gets added. The wiki has some great info already, I can only imagine what it'll look like by the end of the comp! :aussie:

Awesome Stuff Steven, and lets hope we get bombarded with new topics, articles and info

If you want some ides on what to write about, then have a look at this list of Howtos https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index.php?title=How_To
which is a list of articles that i had thought of that might be useful.

Also the Species Guide here https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index. ... cies_guide needs a lot of work to retro fit the Template to each tree type.
See the template here https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index. ... estemplate

If anyone needs a Hand, then do not hesitate to ask ( PM me directly ). If it i s a common query we can write a wiki page to answer it :-)

Great idea.

I used to edit and created a little once upon a time.
This will potentially be the impetus that I require to get involved again!

I'll continue my work on Category 2.

I'd like to try a "how to grow a pre-bonsai from seed / seedling" article.
Mostly on how to tackle the transition from seedling to prebonsai.
I don't intend to cover seed germination ( too vast and too many seed species ) and I don't expect to have a complete from seed to bonsai ( I'm too new to have one like that ) but a seedling to prebonsai I could cover!

How come Ken doesn't get 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize for the work he's already put in? Many thanks Ken for the powerful contribution. (Hope the building is going well. I remember seeing the brickies next door at 6.30 in a Canberra winter frost and thinking "this ain't easy..."

Well I'm a reasonable writer and good with HOW-TO's, having written a few Linux & game modding guides in the past so I guess the How To page is where I'll start. :)

I'll start with 2 subjects:

How to package a tree for shipment
How to collect seed

Will be my first attempt writing on bonsai so will be interesting.

What a great community based competition idea!

Cheers

Nice work! :tu:

Hoping to get stuck into some this weekend... just need to find all the beginner ones :P hahaha

Seriously though, there is wide variety of topics, so even people like me, who are still learning, can still join in :hooray:

Good, we could link yours and mine.
I intend to do a doc on how to handle saplings and into turning them into prebonsai.

I'ld like to do 2

1: Basic Botany for Bonsai: Outlining botany relevant to Bonsai and how it relates to the growth of our trees and the techniques we use with them.

2: (Title to be decided): Outlining lessons I have learnt in my first years of Bonsai that will help beginners approach Bonsai with a long term approach to produce great Bonsai

And a question; Can we start topics to get information from other members to become part of our topics?
